Setting the Defaults for Cache Files

You can set up default paths, the file name syntax, and cache file formats to use for cache files. These defaults are used by:

These preferences are saved with the scene, so if you change them in your current scene, you won't see their effect until you create a new scene.

To set up the defaults for cache files:

  1. Choose File Preferences from the main menu.

  2. In the explorer that opens, select Simulation or click its icon to open the Simulation Preferences property editor.

  3. Select the File Cache Path Template options to set the default Path, File Name, and Cache Type (file format) for the cache files — see Simulation Preferences [Preference Reference] for information.

Adding Tokens to the Paths and File Name

For a list of the tokens you can use in the cache path and file names, you can click the Tokens button beside the Path text box. This opens the help topic for Tokens and Templates.

You can use any of the universal tokens described there, such as [Date] or [Time], in addition to the ones for caching.

Frame Padding

You can add frame padding to the cache file to cache the frames with an offset from the scene's timeline.

To pad the frames, you add the number sign (#) plus the number of zero digits you want to add in the [Frame] token for the File Name (such as [Frame #3] to add three zero digits to the cache file name.

See the description for the [Frame] token in Tokens and Templates [Data Management] for full information, and Setting the Frame Padding [Rendering] for examples.
