You can convert complex objects in your scene to bounding boxes, then use these objects as simple, pre-visualization Scene or Cache representations. Setting up a scene with bounding boxes also increases playback speed and decreases memory use. For example, you can tweak keyframe animation for a character directly in the context of a full city scene.
