What's New in Modeling

Retopology Toolset

The Quad Draw tool now offers a more streamlined workflow for retopologizing meshes. The following improvements enhance Maya's existing retopology toolset.

Relax brush

Quickly clean up new topology created with the Quad Draw tool using the new Relax brush. When the Quad Draw tool is active, select from relax options, and then drag the brush across your mesh to even out the spacing between vertices.

Edge extend

Speed up topology creation with new Extend options. You can now Ctrl + Shift-drag existing edges, borders, edge loops, and vertices to quickly create new polygons while using the Quad Draw tool.

Auto-weld

You can now eliminate overlapping components when you create or edit a Quad Draw mesh. When the new Auto-weld option is enabled, the Quad Draw tool automatically welds components that are close together.

Make Live

You can now snap the Quad Draw tool to a surface using Make Live. The improved Make Live feature replaces the Modeling Toolkit's Other Surface transform constraint. Updates include a field that displays the name of the current live surface and a popup-menu that lets you select from previous live surfaces.

Construction history support

The Quad Draw tool no longer deletes pre-existing history on a mesh. When construction history is turned on in the Status Line, history nodes are now created as you work.

Better Booleans

Starting in the Maya 2014 Extension, all boolean operations on polygons use a new algorithm. The new algorithm is an improved alternative to Maya's legacy boolean algorithm and offers better boolean results.

While boolean workflows and options have not changed, operations are now faster, more stable, and robust.
