Retarget animation from one character to another

To retarget from one character to another

  1. Create a HumanIK character definition for each character.
  2. Open the Character Controls and select the target character from the Current character menu.
NoteThe target character must have a Control rig. If the selected character has no Control rig, Maya creates one.
  3. Click , then select Source > character, where character is the name of your source character. (All HIK characters available in the scene are automatically listed in the Source menu.)

The target character snaps to match the position of the source character, and the retargeted animation is automatically added to a new animation layer called RetargetLayer.

  4. (Optional) To add the Control rig of the target character to a new animation layer, click the menu button , then select Control Rig > Add to new animLayer.

This set up lets you easily modify the retargeted animation non-destructively using animation layers.

NoteTo add the Control rig to an existing animation layer (such as RetargetLayer), select the layer in the Animation Layer Editor, then select Control Rig > Add to animLayer: <layerName> in the Character Controls.
