Retargeting saved animation onto a character

After you have saved motion data or keyframe animation using the Character Controls window > File > Save Character Animation option, you can retarget that animation onto any character.

  1. From the Character Controls window > Character drop-down list, select a character.
  2. Select > File > Load Character Animation.

The Open File dialog box appears.

  3. Select the .fbx file containing the animation and click Open.
NoteFor best results, use .fbx files saved using the Save Character Animation option.

    See Saving a character animation.

  4. The Load Character Animation Options dialog box appears.

  5. In the Load Technique area, select the Retarget option.

Select Add Keyframes if you want to allow extra keyframes to be added during retargeting. Keyframes are adjusted when necessary during retargeting to compensate for differences between the two characters. Allowing added keyframes helps to preserve the original animation as closely as possible.

  6. Make sure the take you want to retarget is selected in the Take list.
  7. Click Open.

The animation from the file you selected is retargeted onto the current character in the scene.
