Each of these modes lets you select different aspects of your scene, from objects to pivots. The default setting, if no modes are selected, is Models.

The three types of Object Modes are:

Model

Lets you select objects, models, curves, markers, Nulls, and bones.

Vertex

Lets you select vertices in the Skins window. This mode is like Object mode, but you must select objects first before selecting their components. This option is automatically activated and only available when the Skins window is open.

Pivot

Lets you select and manipulate pivots. When Pivot mode is activated, you can transform the pivot point of an object. You can use IK effector pivots to give you better control over hand and foot rotation or you can offset an object’s pivot so that the object can rotate (or pivot) around it.

Tip

Press Shift-D to deselect objects or properties.
