Chapter 5, Getting Familiar with Your Workspace
Curve Editor

The Curve Editor displays the animation curves for a composition. This view has the same features as the curve editor in the Animation tab of the tool UI, with the exception that you can set options for the view. Options make it possible to view either all of the animation curves for the composition, or the curves for the currently selected tool node. Options also make it possible to lock the view onto the animation curves of a specific tool--see Curve Editor.

Setting Curve Editor Options Top

You can change the way the Curve Editor is displayed by setting its options.

To set the Curve Editor options:
  1. With the mouse cursor focused in the Curve Editor view, middle-click or press the tilde (~) key to display the Gate UI and go through the south gate.

Curve Editor options appear in the tool UI area.

  2. Select the Display tab.

  3. Set the Display options.

Pin -- Lock the time of the view to either Composition or Tool. If you lock the time to Composition, the view always displays animation curves in global time. If you enable Tool, the view always displays the local time of the tool node currently selected in the Schematic view.

Composition -- Display animation curves in global time.

Tool -- Display animation curves in the local time of the tool node selected in the Schematic view. If you did not select the Pin option for a specific tool, the Curve Editor view updates each time you select a different tool node in the Schematic view to reflect the animation curve of that tool node.

  4. Set the Guides options.

Snap -- Snap keyframes snap to the grid or frame when you move them in the Curve Editor.

Show Grid -- Display the grid in the view.

Show Axis -- Display the X and Y axis in the view.

Show Ruler -- Display a ruler along the left and bottom edges of the view.

Show Properties -- Display or hide the curve properties.

  5. Select the Playback tab to display the Time and Frame Rate options.

Note: Playback options are also used in the Track Editor, Player, and Schematic views.

  6. Set the Viewer Time options.

Follow Master -- Uses global time. Deselect to use local time.

Offset -- Lets you set a frame offset for the time. The frame offset is with respect to the time you set for the view. For example, if you set a frame offset of 5 and selected the Follow Master option, the proxy in the view always displays the frame that is five frames ahead of the frame currently running in global time. If you deselected Follow Master, the proxy in the view always displays the frame that is five frames ahead of the frame running in the local time of the view.

Update on Play -- Updates the proxy at each frame when you play the composition. Deselect to update the proxy only when you stop playing the composition, and only at the scrub frames when you scrub through the composition.

  7. Set the Frame Rate options.

Play All Frames -- Plays all frames in the composition, regardless of whether it maintains the frame rate set for the composition. Deselect to have the view maintain the frame rate for the composition, at the expense of dropping frames where necessary.

User -- Lets you set the frame rate at which you want the view to play the composition.

Stop on Drop -- Stops playing if a tool is dropped into the dependency graph.
