Editing Subtitle XML Files

You can edit Subtitle XML files in any text editor. This is especially convenient for making multiple versions of the text, for example, in different languages, and not having to do so on the Smoke workstation.

To edit a Subtitle XML file in a text editor:

  1. Open a Subtitle XML file in a text editor such as kedit on Linux, Notepad on Windows, or TextEdit on Macintosh.
TipSample Subtitle XML files are available in /usr/discreet/xml/<version>/samples.
  2. Edit the file using the proper Subtitle XML syntax. See Subtitle XML Syntax.
  3. Save the Subtitle XML file. Make sure the file maintains the .xml file extension to be read properly in Smoke.
  4. If necessary, check the validity of the Subtitle XML file.

You can now import the Subtitle XML file from the Interchange menu. See Importing Subtitle XML Files.

To check if the Subtitle XML file is valid:

  1. Open up the Subtitle XML file in an application that reads XML files, for example, Internet Explorer.

In Internet Explorer, you can collapse or expand each element, and easily see if there are mistakes in the structure of the XML, since it is colour coded.
