Import and export

The following describes known limitations related to file import and export.

Errors using files and directories containing double-byte characters

Mudbox does not support file, attribute, or directory paths that use double-byte characters in the names (such as found in Japanese, Korean, Chinese languages). Text strings should be restricted to single byte characters only (Latin alphabet).

Using text strings that contain double-byte (extended ASCII) characters may result in an error or data loss.

Objects hidden in Maya are visible when imported to Mudbox using FBX

Objects whose visibility was set as hidden in Maya and subsequently imported to Mudbox using the FBX format appear visible.

OBJ files with many UV tiles occupying a large texture space are slow to load

The load time for .obj files can be very slow if the number of UV tiles, and their texture space, ranges in the thousands or more.

Workaround: In these situations, configure the UV texture coordinates so they occupy fewer UV tiles and occupy a smaller UV texture space prior to importing the model to Mudbox. The UV layout for a model can be edited using a 3D modeling or UV editing application with features designed for this purpose. For more information, see Prepare a model for sculpting and UVs overview.

Export Selected ignores selection when using .mud format

The File > Export Selection feature ignores the current selection and exports all items in the scene when the .mud file format is used.

Workaround: Export a selection using the .obj format. If the .mud format is required, save your scene with all objects. Open the scene again and delete all objects except for the one you want saved, then save the file.
