Sample color from an image plane

You can copy (sample) a color from a bitmap image on an image plane by first importing the image into the 3D View as an image plane, and then using the Eyedropper.

  1. Import the image that you want to obtain a color sample(s) from as an image plane. For more information, see Import a reference image.
  2. Position the image within the 3D View so it does not block your view of the model. Use the Transformation property for the image plane to do this.
  3. In the Paint Tools tray, select the Eyedropper tool.

The cursor changes to an eyedropper icon indicating the Eyedropper is active.

  4. In the 3D View, click the color area you want to sample.

The color is sampled and loaded into the color channel for the paint brushes. The next time you paint using that brush the color you copied is used.

NoteCopying a color using the Eyedropper does not take into account the lighting and shading on the model. That is, the true color of the pixel is sampled.

To keep the Eyedropper tool active until you select another paint or sculpt tool press the I key as you sample.
