Importing and Exporting dotXSI Files

You can import and export a file saved to the dotXSI format. Crosswalk for Softimage supports dotXSI versions 5.0, and 6.0.

Importing dotXSI

You can quickly import a dotXSI file by dragging and dropping it directly into an empty viewport. The format and version of the file is detected automatically and the importer loads the scene data.

  1. Choose File Crosswalk Import from the main menu.

  2. Set the parameters in the Import Crosswalk Options Dialog Box [Properties Reference].

  3. Specify the path and file name for the dotXSI file to be imported. Click the Browse (...) button to select a specific location and filename from a browser.

  4. Click Import. The imported scene's contents are added as a model under the current scene.

Exporting dotXSI

You can export a single object, multiple-selected objects, or the entire scene to a single dotXSI 5.0 or 6.0 file. dotXSI 5.0 and 6.0 files can be saved in ASCII or binary format — both of which use an .xsi file extension.

  1. To export:

    • Choose File Crosswalk Export

    • Choose File Crosswalk Export to Max

    • Choose File Crosswalk Export to Maya

The Export to Max and Export to Maya options output a dotXSI 6.0 file which is currently the optimal format for exporting to a Crosswalk-enabled 3ds Max or Maya installation. 3ds Max and Maya can read the dotXSI format using the Crosswalk for Max and Crosswalk for Maya plug-ins, respectively. For more information, see Using Crosswalk for 3ds Max and Using Crosswalk for Maya.

  2. Set the parameters in the Export Crosswalk Options Dialog Box [Properties Reference].

  3. Specify the path (the default location is the dotXSI folder of the current project) and the file name for the dotXSI file being exported.

Click the Browse (...) button to select a specific location and filename from a browser.

  4. Click Export.
