Importing and Exporting dotXSI Files

You can import and export a file saved to the dotXSI format. Softimage supports dotXSI versions 3.0, 3.5, 3.6, 5.0, and 6.0.

The importer and exporter for dotXSI 5 and 6 are available from the File Crosswalk Import and File Crosswalk Export menus, respectively. For more information, see Using Crosswalk for Softimage.

Importing dotXSI Files

You can quickly import a dotXSI file by dragging and dropping it directly into an empty viewport. The version of the file is detected automatically and the appropriate importer loads the scene data.

To import a version 3.0, 3.5, or 3.6 dotXSI file

  1. Choose File Import dotXSI from the main menu.

  2. Set the parameters in the dotXSI Import Options Dialog Box and click OK.

  3. The Import .xsi browser opens to the dotXSI folder of the current project. Navigate to the folder that contains the dotXSI file you want to import.

  4. Select the file to be imported. Its name appears in the File Name text box.

To select a dotXSI file (.xsi), make sure that the File Types text box is set to Exported .xsiFiles (*.xsi).

  5. Click OK. The imported scene's contents are added as a model under the current scene.

Exporting to dotXSI

You can export scene data to any version of the dotXSI file format. You can export a single object, multiple-selected objects, or the entire scene. All objects are exported to a single file with the *.xsi extension.

Exporting Version 3.0, 3.5, or 3.6 dotXSI Files

You can export a single object, multiple–selected objects, or the entire scene to a single version 3.0, 3.5, or 3.6 dotXSI file. These versions of the dotXSI file can be saved to an ASCII or binary format — both of which use an .xsi file extension.

  1. Select the object or objects to be exported. If no objects are selected, the entire scene is exported (including the scene_root).

  2. Choose File Export dotXSI from the main menu bar.

  3. Set the options in the dotXSI Export Options Dialog Box and click OK.

  4. The Export .xsi browser opens to the dotXSI project folder. Enter a File Name for the file being exported, and click OK.
