Render Descriptions

By default, XGen Descriptions render with the mental ray for Maya renderer. When you create a Description, Maya automatically assigns a mental ray hair shader to the primitives generated by the Description (see XGen Hair phenomenon).

NoteYou can use other renderers with XGen. See Renderman DSO.

Save and setup dynamic curves for rendering

To render spline primitives animated by an AnimWire Modifier, export the dynamic output curves to an Alembic cache file. The mental ray render uses the cache to apply motion blur to the rendered dynamic primitives.

To save and setup dynamic curves for rendering

  1. In the Outliner, select the dynamic output curves.
  2. From the Maya main menu bar, select Pipeline Cache > Alembic Cache > Export Selection Alembic.

Maya saves the animation to an Alembic ( .abc) file in thecache\alembic folder of the set Maya project.

  3. In the XGen Window, click the Modifiers tab.
  4. Under Modifiers, select the AnimWires modifier.
  5. In the Modes section, turn off Live Mode.
  6. Click beside Wires File and browse to the location of your saved Alembic file.

XGen uses this cache file to animate the curves at render time.

Set Maya Render Settings

  1. In the Maya Render Settings window (Window > Rendering Editors > Render Settings) and set Render Using to mental ray.
  2. To use motion blur with you render, click the Quality tab and in the Motion Blur section, set Motion Blur to Full.
  3. Click Close.

Batch Render Descriptions

Before you batch render, save and setup any dynamic curves and set your Maya Render settings.

  1. In the XGen Window, click the Preview/Output.
  2. In the Output Settings section, set:
    • Operation to Render.
    • Renderer to mental ray.
    • Primitive Bound to 1 or greater than 1.

For long primitives, set this value higher. If you know the Length of the primitives, set Primitive Bound .

  3. In the mental ray Settings section, set Render Mode to Batch Render.
  4. In the mental ray Motion Blur Settings, turn on Enable Motion Blur

Motion blur must also be enabled in the Maya Render Settings Window See Set Maya Render Settings above.

    .
  5. Set the mental ray Motion Blur Setting options you want.
  6. Export the XGen patches for rendering, by selecting File > Export Patches for Batch Render.
  7. If the patches are animated, turn on Animated and set the Frame Range required for the render
  8. Click Export File.

Maya saves the XPD file with the Description name to the xgen folder of the set Maya project.

    folder using the Description name.
  9. Press F6 to switch to the Render menu set then select Render > Batch Render.
NoteRendering with mental ray standalone or mental ray for Maya Satellite is not recommended for XGen.
