Troubleshoot sculpt layers
 
 
 

The following table lists common problems related to sculpting layers and possible solutions:

Problem/Error message Solution

Cannot sculpt on an existing layer. Nothing appears on the mesh after a sculpt stroke.

Determine whether the layer is locked, and unlock it if required.

Cannot change the visibility for an existing layer

Determine whether the layer is locked, and unlock it if required.

Cannot erase sculpting on an existing layer

Determine whether the layer is locked, and unlock it if required.

Cannot sculpt on an existing layer. A message appears indicating that the sculpt layer is locked to another subdivision level.

Determine whether the layer is currently available for sculpting. That is, if a No Sculpting symbol appears beside a layer name, it indicates that the subdivision level currently displayed does not match the level on which the layer was originally created.

Ensure the current subdivision level matches the level that the layer was first created/edited by using the Page Up or Page Down keys to display the subdivision level that matches the level number indicated beside the layer. The No Sculpting symbol disappears when the layer and subdivision level are matched correctly.

Cannot see the sculpting on a layer

Determine whether the layer is currently visible, and click the visibility icon if required.

Turn on the Show Mask option, to determine whether any masking has been applied to the layer (indicated by the existence of red colored faces on the model)

The model is not visible in the 3D View

Determine whether the model is in the scene by first checking that its name appears in the Object List. If it does, select the Layers window and ensure that the visibility icon for the base mesh is turned on.
