Creating a proxy for a referenced object

You may notice the interactive performance of your scene is slowing down as it becomes more complex. You can speed the scene up again by replacing some of the more complex objects with simpler proxies.

To create a proxy file for the tree

  1. Select File > Save Scene As and save your current work under the name graveyard1.ma.

Saving your versions of the graveyard scene as Maya Ascii files makes it easy for you to distinguish them for the original graveyard Maya binary scene file.

  1. Select File > Open Scene and open tree.ma.

This is the tree file you exported from the previous step. If you zoom out, you can see the tree sitting in the same spot as in the graveyard scene.

  2. Select Display > Heads Up Display > Poly Count.

Maya displays information about the scene in the top-left corner of the workspace. You can see that the tree consists of 17136 faces.

  3. Select the leaves and press delete.

Notice that the number of faces drops to 2976 in the poly count. Since the base of the tree is still the same size and shape, this is makes an ideal proxy.

  4. Select the tree and open the Attribute Editor.
  5. In the willow1Main tab, change the transform name to treeProxy.
  6. Select File > Save Scene As and save the file as treeProxy.ma.
