Opening a file from another 3D package

You can open .3ds, .dae, .dxf, and .obj files via File > Open. Save your file in the originating software (such as Maya) by exporting as an Autodesk (*FBX) file type so you can open the file in MotionBuilder.

To open a file from another 3D package:

  1. Select File > Open from the MotionBuilder menu bar.

The Open File dialog box appears.

    Open File dialog box

NoteIf you want to open a file other than .fbx, make sure you choose “All” from “File of Type”.
  2. Using the Open File browser, select a file and click Open.

The Open Options dialog box appears.

    Open Options dialog box

  3. Disable any elements of the file you do not want to load with the file.
  4. Activate Apply Namespace if you want to prepend a namespace to objects included in the incoming file.
  5. Click Open.

    The file loads in MotionBuilder.

To open a file into a scene, see Merging.
