When entering a soft effect editor, you can have the background layer rendered automatically. Or, you can enter the editor without rendering the background layer and use the Preview FX or Context option to preview the result.
You set these rendering options in the Module/Soft FX section of the Preferences menu. Enable or disable the Auto Rendering button.
