The LOG file (.log) is an ASCII text file that contains messages generated by the renderer (though not the Default Scanline renderer). You can specify a name and location for the log file, and the "verbosity" level of the messages it contains, in the Rendering preferences. These preferences are also available on the Render Message Window.
