Using the Move Point Tool

As an alternative to translating points, you can use the Move Point tool. The Move Point tool lets you translate whatever point is under the mouse pointer just by clicking and dragging — you do not need to select the point first.

The Move Point tool uses the same manipulation modes as the Translate tool — for more information, see Component Translation Modes. When you activate the tool, it automatically remembers the last mode used.

You can use Prop to activate proportional modeling so that neighboring points are also adjusted with a falloff based on distance — see Manipulating Components Symmetrically.

Using the Move Point Tool

As an alternative to selecting and translating points, you can move points individually using the Move Point tool:

  1. Select a geometric object.

  2. Activate the Move Point tool by choosing Modify Component Move Point tool from the Model toolbar.

  3. In a 3D view, position the mouse pointer over a point on the object, then click and drag to move it.

On polygon meshes, you can press and hold Alt before you begin moving a point to snap and weld it to another one. See Welding Vertices [Polygon Modeling] for other ways to weld points.

Welding with the Move Point tool uses the same snapping region size as the Snap tool. You can modify the region size using the Snap menu. Alternatively you can also change the region size using Ctrl+mouse-wheel, but this works only if you are not using the mouse wheel to zoom — see Mouse Wheel in Camera Preferences [Preference Reference].

Setting the Picking Region Size

You can set the size of the picking region that determines whether a component is "under" the mouse pointer when using the Move Point tool.

  1. Choose Transform Transform Preferences.

  2. Set Move Point Pick Size to the desired value in pixels.

This option also affects the Weld Point tool.

Display Options

You can turn off the display of points while using the Move Point tool with Show Points in Move Point Tool in your Tools > Transform preferences. This option also affects the Weld Point tool.
