Creating New Clips Based on Driven Objects (Split in Space)

You can split an action clip based on the objects (or elements of the objects) that are driven by that clip. This creates a new clip based only on the elements that you select, meaning that you can divide one clip into many, each containing different segments of the animation. For example, you can decouple the hands of a character from the rest of its body so that you can animate them separately.

Splitting a clip does not create a new action source, but you could freeze the new clip to create a source — see Freezing Clips into New Sources.

NoteIf you split a clip that has a timewarp, the whole timewarp is copied on the new clip portions: the timewarp effect itself does not split.

To create a new clip based on selected driven objects

  1. Select the clip you want to split.

  2. Press Ctrl and select the elements being driven by the clip whose properties you want to use to create the new clip.

For example, select only the character's legs to create a new clip that includes only them.

TipTo determine which objects are currently driven by the clip, right-click the clip and choose Select Driven Objects.
  3. Choose Clip Split in Space from the mixer's command bar.

This deactivates the selected objects in the original clip and creates another clip with only the selected objects activated.

The new clip retains the name of the original clip with an instance number appended to it. You can now use each clip independently.

TipMute the track of the original clip if you want to see only the animation of the new split clip.
