Hair Dynamics Operator Property Editor
 
 
 

Allows a hair object to respond to movement of the hair emitter and other forces, as well as controls how the dynamic simulation is calculated.

To apply: Choose Create Dynamics on the Hair panel.

To display: Select the hair object, click the Selection button on the Select panel, then click the Hair Dynamics Operator icon.

Mute

Toggles the operator on and off.

Reset Dynamics

Click the Reset Dynamics button to return the hair to its initial groomed state.

Cache File

The cache stores the results of the dynamics calculations for faster playback.

Cache Mode

How the cache is used for the simulation:

  • Live (no cache): The simulation always updates based on the previously computed data. If you change a hair parameter, you see the effect of the new value based on the last positions of the hairs. This mode is useful for testing as you work, but not for rendering or calculating motion blur. To do either of these, you need to switch to Read& write or Read only.

  • Read & write: The dynamics are read from the cache when available for the current frame. When not available, the dynamics are calculated for the current frame (as well as any missing frames from the beginning of the simulation) and written to the cache. If you change a hair parameter, the simulation is reset and the cache is cleaned but nothing is recomputed until you change frames.

  • Read only: Simulation data is always read from the cache even if you change hair parameters.

File Name

The path of the cache. If Usr is on, the path is displayed as you entered it. If Res is on, the resolved path is displayed. You can type a different path or use the Browse (...) button to change locations. Valid paths are displayed in white, invalid paths are red, and read-only paths are gray.

Delete Cache Files

Click the Clear Cache button to delete the cache files.

Sensitivity To Forces

These parameters control the amount of influence each force (see Forces [ Simulation]) has on the hair. Using the values here, you can increase or decrease the effect that the forces have on hair while keeping the force's values the same.

For hair to be affected, you must first apply the appropriate force to the hair object. A force has no effect on hair unless a value other than 0 has been set in this control.
