Use bump mapping to create the appearance of detailed relief on a model with simple geometry. Make sure that there are lights
in your scene or the Bump Map shader will not work.
To create a Bump Map:
- In the Asset browser, drag a Material asset from the Shading Elements folder and drop it onto your model.
- In the Material Settings, enable Advanced Mode.
- In the Asset browser, drag a Texture asset from the Shading Elements folder and drop it onto your model.
- Select Attach Texture To Material > Bump Map from the contextual menu that appears. You can also choose the Normal Map option.
If there was no material applied to the model, a new material is created. The new texture is attached to the materials’ Bump
Map or Normal Map property, depending on which option you selected. You can access these properties in the Material settings.

- In the Navigator, expand the Textures folder and double-click the new texture to display the Texture settings.
- In the Texture settings’s Media menu, select New Media and browse for your bump map or normal map image file.
- In the Asset browser, expand the Shading Elements > Shaders folder.
- Drag a Bump Map shader from the Asset browser, and drop it onto your model in the Viewer.
- Select Replace by Type from the contextual menu that appears.
- If there is no light in the scene, add one.
When you translate the light, the bump mapping is apparent and its lighting and shadows update in real time.
- Use the Bump Map shader settings to adjust and fine-tune your bump effect.
