You can create a fluidShape in Hypershade and assign it to any volume primitive node (such as a sphere or cone) using the volumetric Fluid Shape material. This is possible because a fluidShape is actually both a volume shader and a volume shape node. (When you create a fluid container from the Fluid Effects menu, Maya creates the fluid shape node, then assigns it to itself.)
