You can give different objects in the scene the same name, but two sibling nodes (nodes with the same parent) cannot have
the same name.
Note
In node and attribute names, all punctuation except for the underscore (_) and the pound sign (#) are illegal characters.
To change the name of an object or node
- Do one of the following:
- Select an object or node and edit its name at the top of the .
- Double-click a node in the .
- -click a node in the and select .
To rename multiple objects at once
- Select the objects.
- Open the pop-up menu next to the input field(s) on the and select .
- Type the base name for all the objects. Maya renames the objects to have the base name plus an incremental number.
To add a prefix to the names of a parent node and all its children
- Select the parent node and select Modify > Prefix Hierarchy Names.
To search and replace names in the scene
- Select Modify > Search and Replace Names.
You can search and replace all node names in the scene, selected node names, or node names in a hierarchy.
