3ds Max 2012 is not binary backwards compatible with 3ds Max 2011. This means that plug-ins need to be recompiled using the 3ds Max 2012 SDK.

The key new features in 3ds Max 2012 for the plug-in developers are the new viewport graphics API, changes to plug-in defer loading, and support for .NET 4.0.
