Save your work

Save your work frequently using the following save commands:

File formats include: .obj, .mud, and .bio. The .mud file is the Mudbox proprietary file format. Unlike an .obj format file, it can contain multiple subdivision levels, sculpt and paint layers, lights, materials, cameras, and reference painted textures.

NoteIf you plan to export your model to another 3D application and it is particularly large in terms of file size and/or polygon count, you’ll need to consider extracting a texture map of the sculpted detail from the high resolution version of the model. You can then apply the output normal or displacement map to a lower resolution version of the model. For more information, see Texture extraction overview

Save or export paint layers

When you save your model, any paint layers are saved in the same location as your .mud file in a subdirectory with the same name as your .mud file with a -files extension (for example, filename-files).

By default, one image is saved for each paint layer which contains your paint work unless multiple UV tiles exist. In that case, one image is stored per UV tile. In addition, a background image that represents the background color for each channel (diffuse, specular, gloss) is saved to the files subdirectory.

If you want to save one individual paint layer, see Export a paint layer.
