VTR Emulator with Telecine-style Playout Option

Some projects require Lustre to act as a Playback VTR controlled by an external device. This option saves time by allowing the external device to capture graded content without having to play out first to a VTR.

In Lustre 2011 Extension 1, you can now enable the Telecine-style option and have Lustre add pre- and post-roll between every shot, using virtual media and continuous timecode. That way, third-party applications can capture every shot from the first to the last frame without falling into cueing problems.

TipBuild a timeline where every shot shows the needed amount of head and tail frames. Use Sort Modes to arrange the shots so they are sorted in order of ascending timecode.

When the Telecine mode is enabled, the timeline cannot be modified, but you can still save a cut. Disabling the Telecine option removes the virtual black shots and brings back the original timeline.

NoteAvoid working with media with duplicated timecodes, as this will create issues in both Lustre and the third-party application controlling Lustre as a VTR.
NoteVTR emulation does not support audio media.

To control Lustre as a VTR using the Telecine-style option:

  1. Verify that the SDI output and the RS-422 cable from the AJA or DVS breakout box are connected to the third-party application.
  2. In the Engineering menu of the Project Management panel, enable the VTR emulator option.
  3. Save the project.
  4. Load the grade you want to use.
  5. (Optional) To use only a subset of the shots from the cut, create a timeline selection.
  6. (Optional) Trim shots to expose more or less media to be played out.
  7. From the Playout menu, enable the Telecine option.

  8. (Optional) Change the duration of the virtual black shots from the Playout menu with the Black Length field.

By default, the timeline is sorted in order of ascending timecode, and 5-second virtual shots are added before and after every shot, using continuous timecode.

  9. Use the third-party application to control Lustre as a VTR.
