Copy color from an image

You can copy (sample) a color from any bitmap image by first importing the image into the 3D View as an image plane, and then using the Color Picker.

  1. Import the image that you want to obtain a color sample(s) from as an image plane. For more information, see Import a reference image.
  2. Position the image within the 3D View so it does not block your view of the model. Use the Transformation property for the image plane to do this.
  3. In the Paint Tools tray, select the Color Picker tool.

The cursor changes to an eyedropper icon indicating the Color Picker is active.

  4. In the 3D View, click the color area you want to sample.

The color is sampled and loaded into the color channel for the paint brushes. The next time you paint using that brush the color you copied is used.

NoteCopying a color using the Color Picker takes into account the lighting and shading on the model by default. If you want to sample the true color applied to the surface without the effect of lighting and shading, turn on Flat Lighting. For more information, see Display a model without lights and shading. To use the Color Picker and the Flat Lighting feature together press the I hotkey.

The Color Picker tool remains active until you select another paint or sculpt tool.
