The Viewport Configuration command displays the Viewport Configuration dialog. You use controls on this dialog to set options for viewport control.

All the configuration options are saved with the MAX scene file. To configure startup settings for your file, you can save a maxstart.max file. If this file exists, 3ds Max uses it to determine the viewport configuration and settings when 3ds Max is loaded or reset.

  • Visual Style & Appearance Panel (Nitrous Driver)

    For the Nitrous viewport driver, the Visual Style & Appearance panel of the Viewport Configuration dialog sets the rendering method for either the current viewport or all viewports. The visual style can include non-photorealistic styles.

  • Rendering Method Panel (Legacy Drivers)

    For legacy viewport drivers (Direct3D, OpenGL, and so on), The Rendering Method panel of the Viewport Configuration dialog sets the rendering method for either the current viewport or all viewports.

  • Layout Panel

    You specify the division method of viewports, and assign specific types of views to each viewport on the Layout panel of the Viewport Configuration dialog.

  • Safe Frames Panel

    You toggle the status of the video safe frame for the current viewport and adjust its parameters on the Safe Frames panel of the Viewport Configuration dialog.

  • Display Performance and Adaptive Degradation Panels

    For Nitrous viewports, you adjust the adaptive viewport redraw methods on the Display Performance panel of the Viewport Configuration dialog. For legacy viewports (Direct3D, OpenGL, and so on) a similar set of options appears on the Adaptive Degradation panel.

  • Regions Panel

    On the Regions panel of the Viewport Configuration dialog, you specify default selection rectangle sizes for the Blowup Region, the Sub Region rendering options, and (for legacy drivers) the parameters for setting up a virtual viewport.

  • Statistics Panel

    Viewports can display statistis that show the number of vertices, polygons, and so on. Use the Statistics panel to customize that display.

  • Lighting and Shadows Panel (Legacy Drivers)

    For legacy drivers (Direct3D, OpenGL, and so on), the Lighting And Shadows tab sets preferences for lighting and shadow display in shaded viewports. See Previewing Shadows and Other Lighting in Viewports.

  • ViewCube Panel

    These controls affect interaction with the ViewCube feature. Any changes in settings persist between sessions.

  • SteeringWheels Panel

    These controls affect interaction with the SteeringWheels feature. Any changes in settings persist between sessions.
