Copying External Files to Projects

You can use the external files manager to copy a scene's external files into the current project or to any other project. This is useful, for example, when you need to share scene files with a remote user who is not a part of your network, or when you want to copy scene files into an asset management software's project structure.

To copy external files to a project

  1. From the main menu, choose File External Files to open the external files manager.

  2. If desired, select the rows for the files that you want to copy to another project.

If you don't select any paths, all of the files currently visible in the external files manager grid will be copied.

  3. In the Actions section, click the Copy Files to Project button to open the Copy Files to Project dialog box.

  4. In the Copy Files to Project dialog box, choose your settings:

    • In the Project destination text box, enter the path to the project that you want the files copied to. You can also click the ellipses button (…) to browse to the path.

Alternatively, you can check the Use current project check box to copy the files into the current project structure.

    • Check the Change source paths in current scene check box if you want the scene's paths to point to the new location.

If you do not check this box, the files are copied to the new location, while the current scene continues to point to the original files in the original location.

    • Check the Overwrite Files check box if you want existing copies of the files in the destination project to be overwritten.

    • Check the Ignore files used by referenced model check box if you don't want to copy external files used by referenced models in the scene.

The grid control in the dialog box lists all the external files that will be copied to the destination project. If you selected files from the external files manager's grid before opening this dialog box, the selected files are listed. Otherwise, all files that can be copied are listed.

  5. Click OK.
