This document describes known limitations, issues, and fixes in Autodesk Maya 2016 Extension 2. It is strongly recommended that you read this document before you install this release. For reference, you should save this readme to your hard drive or print a copy.

IMPORTANT:

The installation process for Maya 2016 Extension 2 has changed for the Windows and Mac OS X platforms. Instead of entering your product key and serial number during the installation process, enter this information when you first start Maya.

Maya 2016 Extension 2 on Mac OS X launches an AdSSO process. This process may hang if the location where the AdSSO Application is installed is unmounted while the process is running. It is therefore recommended that you install Maya on the local hard drive and not on a removable device. If the AdSSO process hangs, you can terminate the process using the Activity Monitor.

Limitations and notes

The following section describes limitations and workarounds (where applicable) about this release.

Bug Number Description
Animation
MAYA-66994

The freeze plug-in cannot be loaded with locked nodes present, although it stills work if it was already loaded.

Workaround: Load the plug-in before loading scenes.

MAYA-67189 Quick Rig does not support NURBS at this time.
Bifröst
MAYA-65416 When a prop node is first created, it may contain a number of tabs that do not belong to the prop node. This does not affect the simulation and can be resolved by refreshing the tab.
MAYA-65908 In Maya 2016 Extension 2, more substeps are required as compared to Maya 2016 when the same default values are used. To mitigate the slowdown, reduce the time step adaptivity value.

When calculating the scratch cache, Maya 2016 Extension 2 consumes more RAM than it does in Maya 2016 and requires a longer computation time.

MAYA-66651 Curvature/Churn do not appear in the liquidShape and bifrostLiquidMaterial dropdown lists after performing a render and other workflows.

Workaround: Activate channels before doing any operations such as rendering or (in some cases) caching.

Color Management  
MAYA-57730 File nodes created with the 3D paint tool's Assign/Edit Textures functionality are not color managed.

Workaround: Create the file node using the Create Render Node window.

Core Architecture  
MAYA-55943 In Maya 2016 Extension 2, all plug-ins that are compiled for the Mac OS X platform must export the MApiVersion string, otherwise a linker error will occur. Exporting the MApiVersion string can be done by including <maya/MApiVersion.h>. Most plug-ins already include <maya/MFnPlugin.h> which in turn includes <maya/MApiVersion.h>, so in most cases no action needs to be taken.
MAYA-66716

.aif audio is currently unsupported in Playblast on the Mac OS X platform.

Workaround: Convert .aif audio files to m4a. This can be done via Quicktime export: File > Export > audio only > Export as .m4a file. This format is supported by Playblast on Mac OS X.

Dynamics  
MAYA-63441 Editing the particle attributes within the emit command may cause Maya to crash.

Workaround: Use individual setParticleAttr calls to edit attributes. Do not edit attributes by calling the setParticleAttr command with a series of flags.

Installer  
MAYA-63217

Maya Terminal.term and MayaENV.sh have been removed on the Mac OS X platform.

Workaround: The maya command can be used to interact with Maya from the shell; for example, as follows:

Maya.app/Contents/bin/maya -prompt

Refer to the Command Line Tools Readme.rtf provided with the Maya installation for more information.

Interoperability  
MAYA-61009 The FBX plug-in triangulation option was previously implemented so that the resulting triangles in an FBX export would match exactly that of Maya's Triangulation tool. This logic introduced scene corruption problems; therefore the plug-in's triangulation has been reverted to always use the legacy FBX triangulation algorithm. This legacy algorithm doesn't produce incorrect triangles, just different ones.
  1. Use Mesh > Triangulate in Maya.
  2. Export using FBX export, and in the Export window, deselect Triangulate (under the Geometry options).
  3. Delete the triangulate node that was created during the triangulation process. You can do this via command (for example: delete polyTriangulate1), via the Node Editor, or by selecting Edit > Undo.

If you prefer that the FBX plug-in continue to use the algorithm that produces Maya style triangles, set the MAYA_FBX_ENABLE_MAYA_TRIANGULATION environment variable to any value. See the Maya Help for more information on how to set an environment variable.

Warning: Use this environment variable at your own risk, as scene corruption problems may result; for example, the shading assigned to objects may be removed.

  The Send to feature can only be used if the application to which you are sending is the same release version. For example, you cannot send files from Maya 2016 to 3ds Max 2017.

Workaround: Change the NumericVersion value to 2017.0.0 in the Maya syncfg file.

The syncfg files are located in the following directories for each platform:

  • Windows: Maya.2016.5.1.64.syncfg in C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Synergy

  • Linux: Maya2016.5.2016.5.1.64.syncfg in /opt/Autodesk/Synergy

  • Mac OS X: Maya2016.5.2016.5.1.64.syncfg in /Applications/Autodesk/Synergy and /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Synergy

Note: After making this change, should you also have Maya 2016 installed, then any version 2016 Autodesk product will only send assets to Maya 2016. They will no longer send assets to Maya 2016 Extension 2. Any version 2017 Autodesk product will send assets to Maya 2016 Extension 2.

Note: By default (that is, if you do not change your Maya syncfg file), if the application that you are sending to has both a major and an extension version installed; such as, Maya 2016 and Maya 2016 Extension 2, then it is the later version that receives the assets.
For example, if you execute the Send to feature from MotionBuilder 2016, the assets are sent to Maya 2016 Extension 2.
mental ray  
MAYA-52109 The mental ray IBL node Color Gain attribute in the Hardware section of the Attribute Editor incorrectly affects the render result.
Modeling
MAYA-50573

There is a known issue with the hide components feature that the hidden components still appear when pressing 3 to activate smooth mesh preview while using the OpenSubdiv subdivision methods.

Workaround: Use the Maya Catmull-Clark subdivision method.

MAYA-57080 When using the Type tool, occasionally, the Fonts drop-down list may not show all the available fonts for the selected writing system.

Workaround: Scroll through the drop-down list with your mouse wheel. Alternatively, you can enter the text manually in lieu of copying and pasting.

MAYA-58505 The Type Tool becomes unusable after using Copy Tab in the Attribute Editor.

Workaround: If the Type tab in the Attribute Editor has been copied, start Maya with new preferences to continue working with Type.

MAYA-62589 Blend shape targets using Tangent Space don't import correctly inside Mudbox
MAYA-64674 When drawing a curve using the Bezier Curve Tool, the first and last handles are not selectable and appear as gray when Viewport 2.0 is in Core Profile mode.

Workaround: Use DirectX11 or OpenGL - Legacy mode.

MAYA-65042 For scenes with hundreds of blend shape targets, opening the Shape Editor may be slow.
MAYA-65148

Shape Editor's Export/Import doesn't support combination targets. Importing an exported combination target will result in target drivers not being linked to their combination targets.

Workaround: Add target drivers to the combination target once the targets are imported.

MAYA-66411

Sculpting disappears when turning Edit mode off in the Shape Editor after saving/reloading a Maya binary scene file.

Workaround: Save as a Maya ASCII file or edit the target before saving your file.

MAYA-66436 In-between targets are not exporting/importing using the Shape Editor's export/import options.
MAYA-66457 Blend shapes work incorrectly when a single target is created for multiple objects and edited with sculpting tools.
MAYA-66908 Freeze and Mask strokes disappear after adding a target, using the Mask Target Tool, then disabling edit.

Workaround: Toggle the Show Frozen tool setting for sculpting tools to refresh the freeze and mask display.

MAYA-67113

For blend shape targets (including in-between targets) that have physical meshes that already exist in the scene, use sculpting tools either directly on the target mesh in the scene or directly on the base mesh. Avoid activating the sculpting tools when both the base mesh and physical target mesh are selected in the scene, or you may run into viewport refresh issues.

If your base mesh doesn't update after sculpting on the physical target in the scene, simply exit the sculpting tool (switch tools) or scrub the timeline to refresh the viewport.

MAYA-67239 Mirror Pose does not work with HumanIK skeleton.
MAYA-67445

Pose Interpolator: Base mesh bound to joint cannot be found when using HIK.

Workaround: When rigging a character using HIK, select the bones, and in the Pose Editor, click on Create Pose Interpolator, but use the Base Mesh: Selected option when adding the first pose to workaround the issue where HIK fails to find the bound mesh when using Base Mesh: Bound to Joint.

MAYA-67532 Masks don't update after flipping or mirroring targets in the Shape Editor.
Motion Graphics  
MAYA-67438 When creating a MASH network, Linux exhibits erratic behavior when calculating the positions for the audio node.
Rendering  
MAYA-66480 The Outliner Render Setup Filter, Inside Selected Layers and Inside All Layers options do not display instances of objects.
MAYA-67073 When using the Render Setup system to create an override on the File Name Prefix in the Render Settings, you must batch render the scene from the command line instead of batch rendering from within the Maya UI.
Turtle  
MAYA-53946 Ambiguous short flags in the ilrTextureBake and ilrVertexBase commands in the Turtle plug-in have been replaced with unique short flags as follows:

command ilrTextureBake

-dr short for -directory (was -d)

-dsp short for -displacement (was -d)

command ilrVertexBake

-slm short for -selectionMode (was -sm)

-spm short for -samplingMode (was -sm)

-fsp short for -filterShape (was -fls)

-fs short for -fullShading (was -fls)

Viewport
MAYA-66934

When drawing with the Joint Tool in wireframe mode, the Snap to Projected Center functionality may not work as expected.

Workaround:

Option 1: Set the environment variable MAYA_VP2_USE_VP1_SELECTION =1, then select OpenGL - Legacy, OpenGL - Core Profile (Compatibility) or DirectX11 from the Rendering Engine drop-down list in the Display preferences and restart Maya. Select this option if you want to continue to work in wireframe mode.

Option 2: Set the viewport to shaded and X-ray mode (for example, Shading > Smooth Shade All and Shading > X-Ray).

XGen  
MAYA-46321 XGen presets cannot be exported without first loading the mental ray plug-in.
MAYA-59620 XGen sculpting Undo/Redo doesn't work for graphics cards with OpenCL_1.1.
