Purchasers of Maya PowerModeler should refer to the Alias 8.5 qualification chart | |||||
Purchasers of Maya Live should refer to the Maya Live Qualification Information. |
Purchasers of Maya PowerModeler will receive an additional PowerModeler box.
Maya 1.0 is fully qualified and supported only under IRIX 6.2 and higher OS/Hardware configurations and will not load or run under IRIX5.3.
Customers with valid SGI software support should have already received IRIX 6.2, which was sent out starting in May 1996. Customers in North America who have not received IRIX 6.2 yet, should call the Technical Assistance Center at 1-800-800-4744. International customers should call their local SGI office.
Qualification for this release was performed using the specified recommended patch sets from SGI. We strongly recommend that all indicated patches be installed for the proper operation of the Maya software.
Patch sets are patches that Silicon Graphics recommends you install
on your system. These patches are considered crucial for successful
system operation. Patch sets are updated every month and new patches
are regularly added and replaced as required. Alias
will usually only attempt to qualify with quarterly or half-yearly
patch sets.
It is possible for new workstations to have a more recent patch
set installed than Alias's recommended one. In such
a case we do not recommended that you remove that patch set to
downgrade to an older one. It is unlikely that the new patch set
will cause any problems but in the event that a patch related
problem occurs you may have to contact SGI support at the above
listed number.
Customers with valid SGI software support can gain access to patches through the worldwide web:
Customers without worldwide web access should call the Technical
Assistance Center or their local SGI office as indicated above.
You can subscribe to an e-mail notification service for patch
sets. This service will give you a detailed account of patch set
modifications and additions. Subscription is located in the Supportfolio
Online Membership section.
Maya 1.0.x will read Alias Wire files up to Alias 8.5
Maya 1.0.x will write Alias 8.1 compatible wire files.
Maya 1.0.x will also import any 3Design Geo files created since 4.2.
Usage of Maya Developers' Kit requires MIPSpro 7.1 or 7.2 compilers. The MIPSpro 7.2 compiler is strongly preferred. Please see note [p9] below.

Platforms marked Untested: have not been tested in any way by Alias, and at time of press are NOT Qualified. However, based on all the information we have, if you encounter any problems we recommend you install the indicated patch set.
The following are patch related problems or solutions: | |
---|---|
[p0] | IMPORTANT! Patch 2715 is part of all June patchsets but should NOT be installed.
If you install the June patchset on any platform you MUST install
patch 3135 which supercede patch 2715. Patch 3135 is available
for download from http://support.sgi.com. Installing patch 2715 will cause software instability and possible crashes. |

[p8] | Systems running under IRIX 6.5 may encounter minor graphics related problems that are not listed here in detail. These problems should not affect your workflow. This does not affect qualification for this release. |
[p9] | Maya 1.0.x plug-ins that require support for C++ exceptions will
not function correctly on IRIX 6.2, 6.3 or 6.4 unless a part of
patch 2758 is installed on the system. The only plug-in provided
with Maya 1.0 that requires this functionality is ribExport. If
you attempt to use such a plug-in without the necessary part of
the patch installed, Maya will crash with the error: Assertion failed in file "../../c++runtime/throw.cxx", line 841 Patch 2758 consists of just the required parts of the older (superceded) Patch 2483 which was very large. |
[p10] | We have unconfirmed reports of crashes with Patch3108 which appears in SGI's Octane patch set for July and later. Patch 3108 is not in any of the currently qualified patch sets for Maya. Since Alias has not qualified Maya with Patchsets beyond June, we cannot offer any advice. |
[p11] | On some systems with "NG1" graphics (use /usr/gfx/gfxinfo to find out what your graphic system is) attempting to open the Color Picker or switching between wireframe and shaded mode may cause Maya to crash. Removing Patch 2779 prevents this problem. (So far we've encountered this bug on some R5000 & R4600 Indys and on R4400 IndigoII XL) |
The following are known problems: |
|
[1] | When using Maya 1.0.1 on IRIX 6.5: the Color Editor will not open
on the second and subsequent attempts. Attemping to launch ColorEditor
using the mel command may cause Maya to freeze. This does not occur with Maya 1.0 or Maya 1.0.1a |
[2] | [IRIX 6.5] You may see minor graphics discrepancies compared with other systems, but these should not affect your workflow. |
[3] | Maya 1.0.1a is recommended on Indigo R4000 systems. However, performance of this system will be inadequte for most practical usage of Maya. |
[4] | On Indigo2-HighImpact systems, the Render View window displays a banded (as if 8-bit) view of images even though the data is actually good (24-bit) |
[5] |
Indigo2-XZ systems will experience a variety of graphics related limitations: in X-ray shaded mode; not all objects appear semi-transparent, surfaces may change colour when displayed with cloud particles present in the scene, geometry may vanish during interactive camera moves. CVs and other components may change colour during interactive camera moves. Hardware Render Buffer may display surfaces in incorrect colours. |
[6] |
Indigo2-Extreme systems will experience the following limitations: in X-ray shaded mode, mapped textures are displayed incorrectly and other surfaces may change colour during interactive camera moves. Hardware Render Buffer may display surfaces in incorrect colours. |
[7] | Indigo2-SolidImpact and Indy-XZ will occasionally display NURBS surfaces in black instead of the correct texture in shaded mode. |
[8] |
Onyx InfiniteReality systems will experience the following limitations: Selection Handles, 1st and 2nd CV's, emitters, fields and edit points appear as black squares instead of their correct graphic. Hardware Render Buffer may not display procedural textures correctly, especially ramps. Attempting to perform a Render Sequence may result in all black frames. |
[9] | On Onyx-RE2 systems, attempting to perform a Hardware Render Buffer - Render Sequence may result in all black frames. |
[10] | On Octanes and O2s running IRIX 6.5, the first execution of the playblast command can take 30-180 seconds to initialize. During this time, the application may appear to be frozen. When initialization is complete performance will be normal. Subsequent playblasts will not have this delay. |
[11] |
Onyx2 InfiniteReality (IR2) systems will experience the following limitations: In shaded mode with hardware lighting, some polygon surfaces may appear completely black. Hardware Render Buffer may not display 2d textures correctly. Fields and emitters are displayed as brown 2d boxes instead of their correct graphic. diverse crashes on when opening and displaying in shaded mode: Some files cause instant crashes, importing files with textures combined with tgl texture ON can crash. Looking through selected (directional light) |
[12] | On Octane MaxImpact (MXI) running IRIX 6.5, Hardware Render Buffer does not correctly interpret alpha channel in texture files. |
[13] |
Indy-XZ systems will experience the following limitations in shaded mode: surfaces do not display transparency correctly. Occasionally, NURBS surfaces display in black and do not display textures. |
[14] | image planes jitter and resize when doing track/dolly/tumble. |
[15] | On all Octanes but more noticeably on SolidImpact, ESI and EMXI graphics, occasionally during click-drag selection of CVs some appear not to be selected (they remain the deselected colour) although they are selected. Additionally, some selected CVs may be visible through other objects in shaded mode. |
Alias software IS NOT QUALIFIED and NOT SUPPORTED on R2000 and R3000 based systems:
