Purchasers of Maya PowerModeler should refer to the Alias qualification
chart
Purchasers of Maya Live should refer to the Maya Live Qualification
Information.
Purchasers of Maya Cloth should refer to the Maya Cloth Qualification
Information.
Maya 1.0 is fully qualified and supported only under IRIX 6.2 and higher OS/Hardware configurations and will not load or run under IRIX5.3.
Customers with valid SGI software support should have already received IRIX 6.2, which was sent out starting in May 1996. Customers in North America who have not received IRIX 6.2 yet, should call the Technical Assistance Center at 1-800-800-4744. International customers should call their local SGI office.
Qualification for this release was performed using the specified recommended patch sets from SGI. We strongly recommend that all indicated patches be installed for the proper operation of the Maya software.
Patch sets are patches that Silicon Graphics recommends you install
on your system. These patches are considered crucial for successful
system operation. Patch sets are updated every month and new patches
are regularly added and replaced as required. Alias
will usually only attempt to qualify with quarterly or half-yearly
patch sets.
It is possible for new workstations to have a more recent patch
set installed than Alias's recommended one. In such
a case we do not recommended that you remove that patch set to
downgrade to an older one. It is unlikely that the new patch set
will cause any problems but in the event that a patch related
problem occurs you may have to contact SGI support at the above
listed number.
Customers with valid SGI software support can gain access to patches through the worldwide web:
Customers without worldwide web access should call the Technical
Assistance Center or their local SGI office as indicated above.
You can subscribe to an e-mail notification service for patch
sets. This service will give you a detailed account of patch set
modifications and additions. Subscription is located in the Supportfolio
Online Membership section.
Maya 1.5 has the ability to export Maya 1.0 files. Maya 1.5 can read Maya 1.0 format files. Platforms marked Untested: have not been tested in any way by Alias, and at time
of press are NOT Qualified. However, based on all the information
we have, if you encounter any problems we recommend you install
the indicated patch set.
Tip for identifying current OS.
The installed operating system can be identified using this command:
uname -R
displays the text label of the current OS.
Tip when installing patchsets: applicable patches
When installing patchsets you should use the option to install
all applicable patches. In inst by using the i A command. In Software
Manager select Panes->Command from the menu, and enter i A in
the command field when in Customize Installation mode.
[A]
IMPORTANT! Patch 2715 was part of all June patchsets but should NOT be installed.
If you did install this patch on any platform you MUST supercede
it with patch 3247. Patch 3247 is part of most October patch sets but please ensure that you do not have 2715
installed on any machines as it causes software instability and
possible crashes.
[B]
(a) Maya 1.0.x plug-ins that require support for C++ exceptions
will not function correctly on IRIX 6.2, 6.3 or 6.4 unless patch
2758 is installed on the system. The only plug-in provided with
Maya 1.5 that requires this functionality is ribExport, however,
third party plug-ins may require it. If you attempt to use such
a plug-in without the patch installed, Maya will crash with the
error:
Assertion failed in file "../../c++runtime/throw.cxx", line 841
(b) Patch 2752 may be required as a pre-requisite for some installs
of the StudioPaint Translator & Plug-in for Maya. Whether it is
required or not depends on the versions of various subsystems
already installed on your machine.
Patch 2752 is also required on all 6.2, 6.3 & 6.4 systems for
Maya Live 1.5.
If it is required, you should install the applicable (see note above) c++_eoe and compiler_eoe subsystems from Patch
2752 (the entire patch is extremely large, and only these parts
are required to satisfy the pre-req).
2752 is included in the "Recommended Patches for MIPSpro 7.2 Compilers"
and is available on the September patch set CD set.

Systems running "NG1" Graphics should not install patch 3171 (use /usr/gfx/gfxinfo to find out what your graphic system is.)
On some systems with "NG1" graphics, attempting to open the Color
Picker or switching between wireframe and shaded mode may cause
Maya to crash. Removing Patch 3171 (and 2779) prevents this problem.
(So far we've encountered this bug on some R5000 & R4600 Indys
and on R4400 Indigo2 XL.)
[L]
We have received unconfirmed reports of crashes with playblast
caused by Patch 3108 which was in SGI's Octane patch set for July.
Patch 3108 has been superceded by 3312, and as far as we are aware
the crash no longer occurs. However, if you encounter crashes
with playblast, you may consider removing 3312.
Indy 24bit: you are likely to encounter a number of problems:
CVs and vertices may show through polygonal geometry in hardware
shaded mode
Under some circumstances, sprites in hardware shaded mode may
appear broken up.
Some workflows may cause screen refresh to be incorrect as you
tumble and track views. Although it is unlikely that you will
encounter this, changing to shaded mode and back will often correct
the display. Some scenes containing fields may cause crashes on R5000 Indys
that do not crash on other systems. We do not have any other info
at this time. Indy graphic systems may encounter minor graphics related problems
that are not listed here in detail. These problems should not
affect your workflow. Indy XZ: you are likely to encounter a number of problems:
Some workflows may cause screen refresh to be incorrect as you
tumble and track views. Although it is unlikely that you will
encounter this, changing to shaded mode and back will often correct
the display.
File textures not transparent in xray mode and you will be unable
to see CVs, vertices or other components of objects that are behind
file mapped objects. Indigo2 Extreme & XZ: you are likely to encounter a number of
problems:
Hardware render buffer output - particularly of particles, may
differ between Indigo2 graphic systems and other graphics systems. As Hardware Render
Buffer entirely depends on the graphic hardware or its emulation,
use caution when combining HW Render images created on different
hardware.
Some workflows may cause screen refresh to be incorrect as you
tumble and track views. Although it is unlikely that you will
encounter this, changing to shaded mode and back will often correct
the display. Indigo2 graphic systems may encounter minor graphics related problems
that are not listed here in detail. These problems should not
affect your workflow. You will encounter a number of serious problems using Maya on
Infinite Reality graphics.
Diverse crashes when opening and displaying in shaded mode: Some
files cause instant crashes, importing files with textures combined
with shaded mode with tgl texture ON can crash.
All pulldown menus turn black after importing image.
[1]
image planes jitter and resize when doing track/dolly/tumble.
[2]
Octane SSI & MXI: While performing multiple HardwareRenderBuffer
renders and switching between Wire and Shaded Mode, the hardware
display in Maya may became corrupted.
[3]
Octane ESI w/TRAM: Under some circumstances, switching between
the various shading modes display can cause windows other than
the one with focus to alter.
[4]
ESI w/TRAM (IRIX 6.5.1): Under some circumstances, switching from
Perspective view to 4 view display can cause geometry to disappear
from display. Altering the camera view corrects the problem.

[9]
Attempting to launch Maya on R5000 Indy systems running IRIX 6.5.1
causes the system to completely freeze. At time of press we know
of no workaround, and strongly suggest you do not upgrade your
system to 6.5.x
[10]
Although Maya 1.5 will run on R4000 Indigo and Indy systems, the
performance of Indigo R4000s is inadequate for most practical
usages of Maya.
Alias cannot guarantee that all functionality in this
or future versions of Maya will operate. Due to a limitation of
some models of R4000 Indigo and Indy systems, some features of
Maya may cause crashes, or Maya may not launch at all, resulting
in WARNING: Too many contiguous end-of-page jump or divide problems
in [maya.exe].
There is no workaround for this. Due to these reasons, Indigo
R4000 is no longer supported.
[11]
On Octanes and O2s running any version of IRIX 6.5, the first
execution of the playblast command can take 30-180 seconds to
initialize. During this time, the application may appear to be
frozen. When initialization is complete performance will be normal.
Subsequent playblasts will not have this delay.
Patch 3378 in combination with an environment variable:
setenv _RLD_ARGS -f
does appear to fix this problem, but this patch causes Composer to crash on launch if any of its plug-in
are installed, and causes imgworks to coredump when writing jfif
and gif files.
At time of press, SGI is developing 3458 which will supercede
3378. At this time Alias can offer no advice about the
suitability of the replacement patch. In general we recommend you do not install 3378.
[12]
On Onyx-RE2 systems, attempting to perform a Hardware Render Buffer
- Render Sequence may result in all black frames.
Although Maya 1.5 may run on R4000 Indigo, the performance is
inadequate for most practical usages of Maya. Also, due to a limitation
in some models of R4000 Indigo, Alias cannot guarantee
that all functionality in this or future versions of Maya will
operate. Some features of Maya may cause crashes or Maya may not
launch at all, resulting in
WARNING: Too many contiguous end-of-page jump or divide problems
in [maya.exe].
There is no workaround for this.
