The V8.1 release is fully qualified and supported only under IRIX 6.2 and some higher OS/Hardware configurations.
Eight-bit graphics configurations are not supported.

V8.1 application and renderers will load and run under IRIX 5.3 and many systems (Indy, Indigo2 Extreme) are problem-free in this configuration. However, should you encounter an OS or graphics related problem, the Assist Hotline will only be able to recommend that you "upgrade to IRIX 6.2 including any indicated patches." Assist will still be able to answer questions about the functionality of the package.

Whether you choose to run V8.1 under IRIX 5.3 or IRIX 6.2 (or higher), it is crucial that operating system patches be applied in order to rectify known problems that will seriously impede the usability and/or stability of V8.1. Please see the Qualification Chart for exact details.


How To Obtain IRIX 6.2 (or higher)

Customers with valid SGI software support should have already received IRIX 6.2, which was sent out starting in May 1996. Customers in North America who have not received IRIX 6.2 yet, should call the Technical Assistance Center at 1-800-800-4744. International customers should call their local SGI office.

Hardware Notes
For any product other than Render Software, all SGIs require a z-buffer, except Indy XL, and Indigo2 XL.

Patch Notes
[1] All noted IRIX 6.2 machines should have patches 1717, 1861 & 2044 installed.
[2] In addition to IRIX 5.3 All Impact, patches 1332 & 1543 should also be installed.
[3] For all Impact Graphics, IRIX 6.2 machines, patch 1447 should be installed.
Patch 1447 is going to be replaced by patch 1935 and as a result, patch 1935 will be required instead of patch 1447 as soon as 1935 is available. At time of press, patch 1935 is scheduled for release in mid-May 1997.
[4] For all Non-Impact Graphics, IRIX 5.3 machines, patch 1402 should be installed.
[5] C++ ODS (Open Digital Studio) Developers will require patch 1599 on IRIX 5.3.
[6] IRIX 6.2 systems with RealityEngine2 graphics require patch 1702.
[7] In addition to IRIX6.3 O2 R10000, patches 1725, 1759, 1773, 1778, 1795, 1819, 1836, 1876, 1881, 2008 and 2044 should be installed.
The qualified OS can be identified in the following way:

[8] In addition to IRIX6.4 S2MP+OCTANE, patches 1820, 1821, 1827, 1856, 1868, 1894, 1897, 1953, 1956, 1968, 2007, 2035 and 2044 should be installed.
The qualified OS can be identified in the following way:
uname -R displays "6.4 S2MP+OCTANE"
Patch 1953 is currently not released by SGI but will be required for the correct operation of V8.1. At time of press, patch 1953 is scheduled for release in mid-May 1997. This patch fixes a number of graphic display problems. All of the display problems addressed by patch 1953 occur with Toggle Shade display selected. Without the patch you may notice random z-depth problems with the grids showing through your geometry as well as incorrect lighting and surface normal shading.
[9] IRIX 6.2 machines without graphics should have patch 1717 installed.
[10] All Onyx (not Onyx2) IRIX 6.2 machines with InfiniteReality graphics should have patches 1699, 1717, & 2044 installed.
[11] In addition to IRIX6.4 S2MP+OCTANE, patches 1820, 1821, 1856, 1868, 1943, 2007, 2036 and 2044 should be installed.
The qualified OS can be identified in the following way:
