System Requirements

Supported Operating Systems

• Microsoft® Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional or XP Professional x64 edition, or Apple® Mac OS® X 10.6.2 or later
• 2 GHz Intel® or equivalent AMD Opteron™ processor
• 2 GB RAM, 4 GB or more highly recommended
• 4.5 GB free hard disk space for installation of the Suite.
• Supported NVIDIA® or ATI graphics card with a minimum of 256 MB dedicated texture memory*
• DVD-ROM drive
• Three-button mouse
• Wacom™ graphics tablet for sketching
• Refer to online Qualification Chart for complete list of supported hardware configurations.

Note that Autodesk DirectConnect for NX is a purchasable product and has its own install media. Separate installation and licensing is required for each product.

Installation Requirements

• Administrator privileges on your local machine to install Autodesk Alias 2012.
• Sufficient disk space, refer to requirements above.
• Serial Number and Product Key, provided by Autodesk at point of purchase.

The following are delivered and installed as part of the main installation process:

• Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0
• Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package
• DirectX 9.0c Redistributable
• Selected products – Alias, Sketchbook Designer, Inventor Fusion

• Autodesk Alias checks for basic hardware and software configuration settings when installing and running Alias on Windows. If your computer does not meet our minimum system requirements you will be prompted when Alias starts. Although you can ignore all warnings, it is not advised to run Alias if warnings are detected. You may experience poor performance and crashes.
• After downloading an Alias product, if the installer requires a system restart before the install completes successfully, it is because a Windows installation software update is required.

  To start the Alias installation after the restart, navigate to C:\Autodesk\, double-click the product name folder and run Setup.exe.

• When in construction plane mode, Multi Surface Draft 0 Draft option will ignore construction plane axis and use absolute instead when presets in control window are used.
• The layout of controls with Curvature continuity can be different between 2011 and 2012. If you have developed a set of fillets with Curvature continuity and Peak Curvature off, you may not have the same layout of controls when creating a curvature continuous fillet in 2012 with a Form Factor of 0.5. If you have construction history on the fillet from 2011 you can make a modification which will update the shape. Otherwise you will need to approximate the layout by modifying the Form Factor.
• Unloading and subsequently re-loading the Smooth Plugin from Menu > Utilities > Plugin Manager will cause a crash upon selection of the Smooth Control Window. If the Smooth tool is unloaded it will automatically load the next time the application is launched.
• The Alias family of products are tested on specific hardware configurations using workstation class hardware in conjunction with video drivers made available by Nvidia or AMD, depending on make and model of graphics card. For Windows, supported GPU's are restricted to Nvidia Quadro and ATI FirePro level graphics hardware as listed in the Qualification Charts. For Mac, supported GPU's are restricted to Nvidia Quadro and GeForce and ATI Radeon™ level graphics hardware as listed in the Qualification Charts. Intel® Integrated Graphics based cards are not supported and will result in poor performance and incorrect display results.
• If you want to install Autodesk Inventor Fusion 2012 with Alias, we recommend that you also install Autodesk Inventor Fusion 2012 Service Pack 1. On the Alias Install - Configure page, click the small down arrow to expand the Autodesk Inventor Fusion 2012 configuration section, and then select the service pack along with configuration options.
• When deploying on Windows XP 32, please ensure either no version of .Net exists on the client, or that the existing version of .Net installed is 4.0. If an older version of .Net exists on the client during a deploy, the deployment will fail without visible warning, although the logfile will indicate the reason.

• [MAC OS 10.6.3 – 10.6.6] Hardware shade with NVIDIA cards will hang Alias if trying to shade in Per Pixel mode.

• On Windows XP systems, the sizes of Alias products as reported by Add/Remove Programs are incorrect. The correct sizes are:

  Autodesk Alias Automotive, Surface, or Design : 69.7 Mb  
  Autodesk Alias 2012 : 1.32 Gb
  Autodesk Alias Documentation: 485 Mb
