To change an object in a connected workgroup a user must belong to the workgroup that has ownership of that object. When taking ownership of an object the user selects the length of time in which no other user can take ownership. This length of time is called a lease. At the end of a lease the current owner maintains ownership until another user requests ownership of that object. If the lease is expired the requesting user will take ownership of that object.
There are two types of ownership in a connected workgroup environment, ownership of objects (i.e., files, folders, items, and change orders) and ownership of administrative tasks.
This help topic focuses on managing ownership of objects using the Vault stand-alone client or Vault add-ins.
Refer to Ownership Administration in the Administrator's Tasks section for more information about managing ownership of administrative tasks.
Manage File OwnershipIn a replicated environment, your workgroup must have ownership of the files that you want to modify. Ownership prevents another workgroup from checking out the files and modifying them.
When managing file ownership, you can assign ownership to another group, specify lease duration for your own workgroup, and determine whether related documentation or associated items are included when ownership permission is claimed or transferred.
Access the Manage Ownership dialog by right-clicking the file or group of files the workgroup wants to own and selecting Manage Ownership from the context menu.
When performing an edit operation on an entity that is not owned by the current workgroup, but the lease has expired at the owner, ownership is transferred automatically and the edit operation succeeds. However, if the databases are not in sync, ownership is still transferred but the edit operation is canceled.
