Maya 2016 Limitations and Notes

The following section describes limitations and workarounds (where applicable) about this release.

Bug Number Description
Animation General
MAYA-51394 Because of new modeling and editing workflows, the selection scheme of newly created polygon objects such as polySphere and polyCube has changed in this release. As a result, some operations, such as creating a motion trail or an animation snapshot, do not work as before with newly created objects. In order to be able to properly create a motion trail, the object must be deselected and reselected to get the expected behavior.
Animation - Evaluation Manager (Parallel)
MAYA-46457 Batch rendering of scenes with XGen may produce incorrect results in Parallel evaluation mode.
  Plug-in nodes may need to be updated to work with the Evaluation Manager. The MPxNode::compute() method should be overridden and must handle requests for evaluation at all levels of the plug tree. The DG may request evaluation at any level of the plug, while the Evaluation Manager always requests evaluation at the root plug. For example, for plug N.gp[0].p[1], your compute() method must handle requests for evaluation of N.gp, N.gp[0], N.gp[0].p, and N.gp[0].p[1]. See the rockingTransform developer kit example for more information.
  Scenes with multiple attribute level cycles may produce different results with the Evaluation Manager. Users should always strive to eliminate cycles from their scenes.
MAYA-50265 The dgProfiler plugin only works in DG evaluation mode. Parallel and Serial evaluation modes are not supported.
  The new dbtrace command only works in DG and Serial evaluation modes. Parallel evaluation mode is not supported.
Animation - Evaluation Manager (GPU override)
  The most commonly used configurations of the following deformers are currently supported by GPU override : skinCluster, blendShape, cluster, tweak, softMod, polySmoothFace, groupParts. However, certain less common settings are not supported. See the Maya Help for more details.
MAYA-47103 Disable backface culling on meshes to take advantage of GPU override.
MAYA-45486 Due to driver instabilities, GPU override is disabled when using Viewport 2.0 in OpenGL Core Profile mode on Nvidia cards.
MAYA-41344 Due to driver instabilities, GPU override is disabled on the Mac OS X platform when used with the Nvidia Quadro 4000 card.
MAYA-47643 Disable OpenSubdiv smooth mesh preview on the Mac OS X platform to take advantage of GPU override.
MAYA-50137 The Poly Count heads up display option can cause performance issues with GPU Override in some scenes. If you experience poor performance with both of those options enabled, try disabling the Poly Count HUD in the Display menu (Display > Heads Up Display > Poly Count).
MAYA-51210 Performance : Switching between the Legacy Default Viewport and Viewport 2.0 can introduce instability with GPU override enabled.
API
MAYA-47069 API DG/DAG node iterator classes (MItDag, MItDependencyNodes and MItDependencyGraph) no longer return Maya internal nodes. Internal nodes are nodes that are hidden from end-users. Previously, iterators returned both externally visible and internal nodes. Because there is currently no API method available to differentiate between these two types of nodes, internal nodes are now excluded from being returned by iterators. This prevents your plug-in from exposing these nodes to end-users.
Bifröst
MAYA-42846 Bifröst Voxels (as well as Tile View display) will not draw correctly in the viewport when used with Nvidia driver versions greater than 332.21. This issue only applies to viewport drawing. mental ray rendering still correctly renders voxels. The workaround is to roll back to a driver which is <= 332.21. This issue has been logged with Nvidia.
MAYA-46199 File Referencing a Bifröst scene with meshing enabled (on the liquidShape node), will create unintentional meshing related edits at file referencing time. To avoid this issue, ensure that the scene file to be referenced has all Bifröst meshing attributes disabled locally in the scene. Once it has been referenced, enable the meshing to store the related attribute changes as an explicit reference edit.
MAYA-46930 Maya retains the system memory used to compute and scratch cache Bifröst simulations until you exit Maya.
MAYA-47655 Changes to the foam graph or parameters are not reflected unless both liquid and foam scratch caches are flushed.
MAYA-49418 All Bifröst edits require a rewind in order to update changes (including creation).
MAYA-49577 It is currently not possible to render Bifröst liquids and aeros together. Each simulation type must be rendered separately.
MAYA-49767 Using an instanced object as a kill mesh on a Bifröst liquid fails unless the world mesh[index] corresponding to the appropriate instance is plugged into the Clip Bounding Box Transform attribute on the Bifröst Compound. To do so, manually plug the outbound World Matrix[index] port (associated with the instance) from the object Shape node (mesh) to the Bifröst Container's inbound Clip Bounding Box Transform attribute in the Node Editor. (Rewind may need to be invoked).
MAYA-50748 If you have browsed for your liquid/aero cache and do not plan on using the solid cache, set the solid cache control to read/1 in order to prevent the graph from continuing to compute.
MAYA-51401 Bifröst scenes created in Maya versions prior to 2016 which contain accelerator objects will require the old accelerator objects to be removed and then re-added in order for the acceleration to work.
MAYA-51618 After creating a Bifröst user cache, extending the timeline past the user cached frames may cause undesired results. Playing or stepping off the user cached frames may cause Maya to stop working. This includes disabling Bifröst object caches (that is, Liquid Cache) in the container nodes.
MAYA-51620 If you intend to add cache frames to your current cache, remain on the last cached frame before setting the Start/End Cache time range in the Bifröst Compute and Cache Options. Otherwise, any change to that last cache frame will cause Bifröst to create an improper cache.
MAYA-51675 The Read/Write option in the Bifröst Compute and Cache Options does not work as documented. Using Read/Write to create a user cache will overwrite current cache files.
MAYA-51714 File referencing or importing the same Bifröst scene more than once is currently not supported.
Color Management
MAYA-41487 If using an OCIO configuration file defined by the OCIO global environment variable, clear the user policy field Export or Load Color Management Preferences from XML File in the Color Management preferences.
MAYA-42107 Textured scenes opened or imported from an FBX file are not color-managed.
MAYA-42244 Adding a user defined transform and then editing the transform does not update the user transform used by Maya. Removing the transform and re-adding it does not solve the issue. The removed user transform is not fully removed from Maya; therefore, the next time a transform is created with the same name, Maya still uses the previous user transform.

Workaround: Re-add the updated transform using another name.

MAYA-45075 Screen space ambient occlusion is too faint by default with Color Management enabled.

Workaround: Set a higher value for the Amount and Radius attributes (in the Screen-space Ambient Occlusion section of the Viewport 2.0 settings).

MAYA-52280 The descriptions of some color transforms in the documentation are incorrect or misleading:
  • The input transform gamma 2.4 Rec 709 (video) applies the inverse of the gamma specified by ITU-R BT.1886 for HD video monitors, while camera Rec 709 applies the inverse of the gamma specified by Rec. 709 for HD video cameras.
  • The view and output transform Rec 709 gamma applies the gamma specified by Rec. 709 for HD video cameras. However, HD broadcast monitors typically have a gamma of 2.4. To render or preview images with a gamma of 2.4, you can create a user transform that references apply_2.40_gamma.ctf in the synColor/transforms/gamma/ folder of the Maya installation location.
Data Transfer
MAYA-51412 On the Mac OS X platform, when importing and exporting DWG or DXF files, utilizing DXF_DCE or DWG_DCE will cause Maya to stop unexpectedly. To avoid this problem, use DAE_FBX when importing these file types.
Interoperability
MAYA-40051 You can export Maya transform node custom attributes to the user properties of FbxNode. However, you cannot export Maya shape node custom attributes, such as mesh node, to FbxGeometry. This is because FbxGeometry does not currently support user properties.

FBX does not support the export of every Maya attribute, for example, SmoothDrawType, or ShaderFX primitive variable node attributes.

If the FBX plug-in encounters an attribute on export that it does not support, it resets the attribute to its default value on re-import.

mental ray
  The mental ray for Maya plug-in is a separate installer for Maya 2016. It will be available for all platforms on the Maya DVD and on the Maya download page online. It must now be installed and uninstalled separately from Maya.
MAYA-50807 In Maya 2016, if you try to load a preset created in Maya 2015 (including the finalFrameEXR preset that is provided with mental ray for Maya) that manually sets the Image Format (that is, attributes .imageFormat and .imfPluginKey in the renderGlobalsPreset_*.mel file), the preset does not work as expected.

To workaround this, you can delete the preset files from the maya\2016\presets directory. Alternatively, you can also manually port the imageFormat preset to work with mental ray for Maya in Maya 2016. Your preset will work in Maya 2016, and the image format used is the image format that was saved with the preset in Maya 2015.

If your renderGlobalsPreset_*.mel preset file contains these lines:

where X' and Y' are the next available unique numbers for naming the attributes. For example, if the last attribute set in the preset file is proc setAttribute122(), then X can be set to 123 and Y set to 124.

MAYA-51062 When running mental ray for Maya on the Linux platform, in order to ensure that the gpu_ao_plugin and the gpu_gi_plugin work as expected, you must add the mental ray bin directory to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH when starting Maya:

Metadata
MAYA-38878 When displaying crease edges, the crease edge color will overlay the metadata edge color, even if different.
Modeling
MAYA-39990 Cannot flip UVs of multiple objects simultaneously.

Workaround: Flip UVs for each object individually.

MAYA-40113 Mesh may flicker when sculpting in viewport running in DirectX11 mode.
MAYA-42167 UV Attribute Transfers do not work if the source has no history.

Workaround: In the Node Editor, break the connection from .worldMesh, but use .outMesh. The attribute transfer should work again.

MAYA-47328 Mac OS X: Stamp thumbnail sometimes does not display in the Sculpt Tool settings window.
MAYA-50369 UV Checker Map display does not update on selection change.

Workaround: Toggle Display checker tiles in the UV Editor on/off to force a display refresh.

MAYA-50620 While using the Grab UV Brush, deleting history may rearrange UV component IDs.
MAYA-51029 While in the UV Editor, soft select doesn't work on any components other than UVs.

Workaround: To use soft select In the UV editor, switch to UV component mode.

Platforms
MAYA-36267 Mac OS X: Non-English OS and Region Settings cause command line renders to have no reflections (German language).

Workaround: Use this environment variable when using a non-English OS region:

export LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"

Rendering
MAYA-33569

When Use default material is enabled while using Viewport 2.0, the following objects may not display in the viewport:

  • Objects assigned the Surface Shader, Use Background shader, Layered Shader or Shading Map
  • IBL node (mentalrayIblShape)
  • Grease pencil
  • Fluids
Workaround: Disable Use default material or use the Legacy Default Viewport instead.
MAYA-38410 Some artifacts occur in Viewport 2.0 and Hardware 2.0 renderer on Mac pro (ATI FirePro D500 and D700) with lighting enabled.
MAYA-44933 If a Maya window (such as the Hypershade) loses focus, it is possible that any torn off window associated with that interface may have difficulty re-docking to the parent window. To overcome this, select the parent window and reset the focus back to it and retry docking the window again.
MAYA-47246 When motion blur is enabled, static meshes may become blurred after translation.

Workaround: Disable Consolidate World from the Viewport 2.0 options window (Renderer > Viewport 2.0 > option box).

MAYA-49500 If your Show > Show All filter settings reset after you right-click in the Hypershade work area or after you re-open the Hypershade, and you notice that your nodes disappear as a result, it may be because your Show > Objects filter is set to be very restrictive (for example, your Show > Objects filter is set to only Shading Groups).

Workaround: Use Show > Objects > Clear Below instead of Show All. Alternatively, you can select the categories of nodes that you want to see from the Show > Objects menu and they will appear in the work area again.

Scene Assembly
  This release, Maya Scene Assembly is improved, specifically in how Maya applies and stores edits. These improvements also make Scene Assembly more stable.

Most improvements are not visually discernable in your scenes; however, MltEdits now returns edits at the corresponding scene level, in addition to those on an assembly. This means you may see more edits listed than you did previously. Scene assembly edits are now contained in their own node, alongside the scene assembly node to which they apply. This means the order of edits is maintained and applied consistently.

XGen
MAYA-24911 When importing animated archives, user must set frame to 'frame' in the description editor in order to render.
MAYA-28065 When having a bad preview after altering clump maps, press preview again.
MAYA-28299 XGen does not support file names or file paths with localized characters (that is, upper-ASCII characters and double byte characters). As a workaround, users should avoid using localized user names.
MAYA-28465 In order to Render archive descriptions using LOD's, you must change the Hi Index to: $aIndex*$aMul + 0 + $aLOD+ 3
MAYA-28828 When rendering a guide driven description and the render does not match the preview, click the XGen preview button again and re-render.
MAYA-35042 If Fabric Engine is installed, Maya will crash if it is started with the XGen plug-ins loaded. There are 3 different possible workarounds:
  1. Rename the PySide folder under the Fabric Engine install directory.
  2. Unload the XGen plug-ins in the Maya Plug-in Manager.
  3. Uninstall Fabric Engine.
MAYA-35845 Use of non-manifold meshes with XGen is generally not recommended.
MAYA-36215 XGen Tube Groom requires tubes to have transformations frozen.
MAYA-37306 Mac OS X: Do not use spaces in the name of your XGen project.
MAYA-37969 XGen, and the geometry that it is bound to, must be in the same namespace. Importing an XGen description or collection on a piece of geometry in a different namespace is not supported.
MAYA-38940 The following modifiers are not thread safe : Debug, Particle, PlaneAnim, Snapshot.
MAYA-41203 Using the slider control to change the Point Display Length in the Generate Maps and Generate Clumping Maps windows does not update the point marker size in the scene view. To change the point marker size, type the desired value into the Point Display Length field.
MAYA-46321 XGen presets cannot be exported without the mental ray plug-in loaded.
MAYA-46457 XGen primitives do not move with animated objects in batch renders if the animation Evaluation Mode is set to Parallel.
MAYA-47262 Archive material can't be rendered if the XGen scene is referenced or imported with namespace.
MAYA-47545 When generating primitives in Uniform Rows and Columns, a small spacing is equivalent to very high density and may overload your GPU if it is too small (~0.01).

Customer Involvement Program

The first time you start Maya, the Customer Involvement Program (CIP) dialog box appears. If you choose to participate in the CIP, Maya automatically sends Autodesk information about your system configuration, what features you use most, any problems that you encounter, and other information helpful to the future direction of the product. Customer Error Reports

We are able to improve the stability of Maya largely because of the Customer Error Reports (CER) submitted by users of our products. We thank you for taking the time to fill out these reports and ask that you include as much information as possible about what actions you were performing at the time the error occurred. These details raise the value of the report immensely and are very much appreciated by the Autodesk Maya Engineering team.
