Maya 2.0 has been qualified under 6.5.4m only. It will run under IRIX 6.2, 6.3 and 6.4 with the October '98 SGI Patchset, but Alias|Wavefont has not conducted any specific testing of Maya running under these conditions.

  • How To Obtain IRIX Patch sets and IRIX 6.5 upgrades.

Customers with valid SGI software support can gain access to patches through the worldwide web at support.sgi.com. Customers in North America can also call the Technical Assistance Center at 1-800-800-4744. International customers should call their local SGI office.

Customers without worldwide web access should call the Technical Assistance Center or their local SGI office as indicated above.

You can subscribe to an e-mail notification service for patch sets. This service will give you a detailed account of patch set modifications and additions. Subscription is located in the Supportfolio Online Membership section.

  • Patch Sets for IRIX 6.2, 6.3, 6.4:
Patch sets are patches that Silicon Graphics recommends you install on your system. These patches are considered crucial for successful system operation. Patch sets are updated every month and new patches are regularly added and replaced as required. It is possible for new workstations to have a more recent patch set installed than Alias's recommended one. In such a case we do not recommended that you remove that patch set to downgrade to an older one. It is unlikely that the new patch set will cause any problems but in the event that a patch related problem occurs you may have to contact SGI support at the above listed number.
Maya is now qualified only under IRIX 6.5.x and Alias will not qualify Maya against patchsets for IRIX 6.2, 6.3 and 6.4

  • For any product other than Render Software, all SGIs require a z-buffer, except Indy XL, and Indigo2 XL. Eight-bit graphics configurations are not supported.
  • A minimum of 128MB RAM is required, however, especially on IRIX 6.5, 128MB of memory will be insufficient for most practical uses of Maya.

Platforms marked Untested: have not been tested in any way by Alias, and at time of press are NOT Qualified. However, based on all the information we have, if you encounter any problems we recommend you configure your Operating System as indicated.
Platforms marked Unsupported: indicate that Maya cannot operate to our standard of performance, stability or quality and at time of press are NOT Qualified.

Tip for identifying current OS.

The installed operating system can be identified using the command uname -R. This command displays the text label of the current OS.

Tip when installing patchsets: applicable patches

When installing patchsets you should use the option to install all applicable patches. In inst by using the i A command. In Software Manager select Panes -> Command from the menu, and enter i A in the command field when in Customize Installation mode.

Known Qualification related problems

[1] Indigo2 High Impact w/TRAM: In some cases, fcheck activated from within the Hardware Render Buffer fails to play sequence of images created with the Hardware Render Buffer. The sequence of images can be viewed with the standalone fcheck.
[2] Indigo2 High Impact w/o TRAM: In some cases, Hardware Texturing produces banding and artifacts.
[3] Indy 24bit: you are likely to encounter the following known problems:
  • CVs and vertices may show through polygonal geometry in hardware shaded mode
  • Under some circumstances, sprites in hardware shaded mode may appear broken up.
  • Some workflows may cause screen refresh to be incorrect as you tumble and track views. Although it is unlikely that you will encounter this, changing to shaded mode and back will often correct the display.
  • Indy graphic systems may encounter minor graphics related problems that are not listed here in detail. These problems should not affect your workflow.
[4] Indy XZ: you are likely to encounter the following known problems:
  • File textures not transparent in xray mode and you will be unable to see CVs, vertices or other components of objects that are behind file mapped objects.
  • Some surfaces may incorrectly appear white when rendered in the Hardware Render Buffer.
  • Sometimes rendering a region in IPR doesn't display correctly.
  • Indy graphic systems may encounter minor graphics related problems that are not listed here in detail. These problems should not affect your workflow.
[5] Indigo2 Extreme & XZ: you are likely to encounter the following known problems:
  • Hardware Render Buffer output - particularly of particles, may differ between Indigo2 graphic systems and other graphics systems. As Hardware Render Buffer entirely depends on the graphic hardware or its emulation, use caution when combining HW Render images created on different hardware.
  • Some surfaces may incorrectly appear white when rendered in the Hardware Render Buffer.
  • Some transparent/translucent surfaces may appear opaque when rendered in the Hardware Render Buffer.
  • Some surfaces may appear to alter colour when viewed in shaded mode with Hardware Texturing ON depending as the camera zoom changes.
  • Some workflows may cause screen refresh to be incorrect as you tumble and track views. Although it is unlikely that you will encounter this, changing to shaded mode and back will often correct the display.
  • Indigo2 graphic systems may encounter minor graphics related problems that are not listed here in detail. These problems should not affect your workflow.
[6] Infinite Reality graphics: you are likely to encounter the following known problems:
  • Selection Handles, 1st and 2nd CVs, emitters, fields, clusters and edit points appear as black squares instead of their correct graphic.
  • All pulldown menus turn black after importing image or after viewing a rendered sequence in the Hardware Render Buffer.
  • Occasionally unselected CVs are not displayed in the right color.
  • Occasionally the wrong textures are displayed in Hardware Texture mode. This usually happen after using the Hardware Render Buffer.
  • (Irix 6.2/6.4 only) Diverse crashes when opening and displaying in shaded mode: Some files cause instant crashes, importing files with textures combined with shaded mode with tgl texture ON can crash.
[7] Onyx-RE2 systems: you are likely to encounter the following known problems:
  • Attempting to perform a Hardware Render Buffer - Render Sequence may result in all black frames.
  • Occasionally the wrong textures are displayed in Hardware Texture mode. This usually happen after to have use the Hardware Render Buffer.
[8] Although Maya 2.0 will run on R4000 Indigo and Indy systems, the performance of Indigo R4000s is inadequate for most practical usages of Maya.
Alias cannot guarantee that all functionality in this or future versions of Maya will operate. Due to a limitation of some models of R4000 Indigo and Indy systems, some features of Maya may cause crashes, or Maya may not launch at all, resulting in WARNING: Too many contiguous end-of-page jump or divide problems in [maya.exe].
There is no workaround for this. Due to these reasons, Indigo R4000 is no longer supported.

Patch Related information and solutions

Recommended Operating System: IRIX 6.5.4m
The last recommended patch set was October 98. All the patch advice for IRIX 6.2, 6.3 or 6.4 offered on these pages is to the best of our knowledge, however, Alias no longer tests on IRIX 6.2, 6.3 or 6.4 and cannot guarantee the correct operation of Maya on these Operating Systems, nor the accuracy of the statements in this section.

[A] IMPORTANT! Patch 2715 was part of all June patchsets but should NOT be installed. If you did install this patch on any platform you MUST supercede it with patch 3247. Patch 3247 is part of most October patch sets but please ensure that you do not have 2715 installed on any machine as it will likely cause software instability and possible crashes.
[B] (a) [IRIX 6.2, 6.3 or 6.4] Maya plug-ins that require support for C++ exceptions will not function correctly on IRIX 6.2, 6.3 or 6.4 unless patch 2758 is installed on the system. Maya Live and the ribExport plugin require this patch and third party plug-ins may require it. If you attempt to use such a plug-in without the patch installed, Maya will crash with the error:
Assertion failed in file "../../c++runtime/throw.cxx", line 841
NOTE: Patch 2758 is provided on the Maya software CD in the sgi_patches directory. It is not installed by default.

(b) [IRIX 6.2, 6.3, 6.4 or 6.5] Patch 3131 is strongly recommended for all systems. It is a patch to the 7.2.1 base compiler runtime environment for Irix 6.2/3/4/5. This contains updates and fixes to the "base compiler" runtime environment, that is the code shared between then C, C++ and Fortran compilers. Specifically if fixes a problem in the SIN function which could e.g. cause spheres to not be spherical. It is also required on some systems for correct operation of Maya Live and the StudioPaint Translator.
NOTE: Patch 3131 is provided on the Maya software CD in the sgi_patches directory. It is not installed by default.

[C] All noted IRIX 6.2 machines should have the October 98 patch set installed which includes:
1397 1417 1482 1492 1598 1615 1638 1678 1961 1973 1982 2090 2122 2133 2143 2181 2200 2213 2239 2271 2278 2314 2331 2350 2373 2383 2414 2487 2575 2580 2673 2687 2708 2763 2779 2851 2852 2860 2861 2870 2912 2964 3038 3045 3055 3083 3093 3113 3117 3133 3139 3150 3171 3182 3185 3213 3217 3229 3247 3252 3318
[D] IRIX 6.2 systems with RealityEngine2 graphics require patch 2739. This should be installed instead of patch 2327.
[E] In addition to IRIX6.3 O2 R10000, the October 98 patch set should be installed which includes:

Note that this patch set was created in Sept. 1997 and is not expected to have any changes.
[K] Systems running "NG1" Graphics should not install patch 3171 (use /usr/gfx/gfxinfo to find out what your graphic system is.) On some systems with "NG1" graphics, attempting to open the Color Picker or switching between wireframe and shaded mode may cause Maya to crash. Removing Patch 3171 (and 2779) prevents this problem. (So far we've encountered this bug on some R5000 & R4600 Indys and on R4400 Indigo2 XL.)
[L] We have received unconfirmed reports of crashes with playblast caused by Patch 3108 which was in SGI's Octane patch set for July. Patch 3108 has been superceded by 3312, and as far as we are aware the crash no longer occurs. However, if you encounter crashes with playblast, you may consider removing 3312.
