Phase Alternate Line. The industry standard for composite video in most of Europe and in many other nations.

PAL divides video images into 576 horizontal scanlines, and the resolution across a scanline can vary from 512 pixels to 1024 pixels. The highest effective pixel resolution is the same as NTSC, somewhere around 720. The frame rate for PAL is approximately 25 frames per second.
