Alias 9.0 for IRIX Qualification, Updated June 1999

Products Version Software Date
DesignStudio, Studio, SurfaceStudio, AutoStudio, PowerAnimator, EvalViewer, Renderers 9.0 1998111300024
Alias 9.0 is Y2K compliant. Please refer to Alias Year 2000 Compliance for more information.

The 9.0 distribution can consist of up to 2 CDs:
  • CD1 The Applications, EvalViewer, ODS, plugins, On-line Help, CourseWare etc.
  • CD2 Composer and Vizpaint (SurfaceStudio does not include Composer or Vizpaint.)
  • Note: 3DCD is no longer distributed with the Alias software. Refer to 3DCD notification below.
  • Please Note The Following:
    • IRIX 5.3 Notification:

    • The 9.0 release is fully qualified and supported only under IRIX 6.2 and higher OS/Hardware configurations and will not load or run under IRIX5.3.

    • How To Obtain IRIX 6.2 (or higher)
    • Customers with valid SGI software support should have already received IRIX 6.2, which was sent out starting in May 1996. Customers in North America who have not received IRIX 6.2 yet, should call the Technical Assistance Center at 1-800-800-4744. International customers should call their local SGI office.

    • Patch Set Notification:
    • Patch sets are patches that Silicon Graphics recommends you install on your system. These patches are considered crucial for successful system operation. Patch sets are updated every month and new patches are regularly added and replaced as required. It is possible for new workstations to have a newer patch set installed than what is listed here. In such a case it is not recommended that you remove that patch set and downgrade to what is listed here. It is unlikely that the new patchset will cause any problems but in the event that a patch related problem occurs you may have to contact SGI support at the above listed number.

An effort has been made to qualify all Alias products under one unified patchset which may differ from the standard patchset. It is strongly recommended that any additional patches be installed or removed as listed in the chart below.

NOTE: There will be no further patchset testing or qualification for IRIX 6.2, 6.3 or 6.4. All testing efforts will be focused on IRIX 6.5 and later. The table below represents the most current qualified patchset information.

    • How To Obtain IRIX Patches
    • Customers with valid SGI software support can gain access to patches through the worldwide web:

      http://support.sgi.com
Customers without worldwide web access should call the Technical Assistance Center or their local SGI office as indicated above.
You can subscribe to an e-mail notification service for patch sets. This service will give you a detailed account of patch set modifications and additions. Subscription is located in the Supportfolio Online Membership section.

    • 3DCD Notification:
    • The 3DCD is no longer shipping with Studio and PowerAnimator. Customers with a 3DCD from a previous product release can continue to use that material in their work. Maintenance customers will have access to content such as sample files and shaders in the coming months on the Assistant Online website at:

      www.aliaswavefront.com/assistant_online/index.html
This new site will combine learning material such as how-to articles with a digital content library. The web site will be updated on a regular basis to ensure that new material is readily available. Twice a year, the whole web site will be placed on a CD and sent to maintenance customers with copies of the Assistant newsletter.

    File Compatibility:

Alias Alias 9.0 will read wirefiles written by prior versions, but prior versions will not be able to read 9.0 wirefiles.
Maya Maya 1.5 and 2.0 for IRIX reads Alias 9.0 wirefiles
Maya 1.5 and 2.0 exports Alias 8.1 wirefiles.
StudioPaint Alias 9.0 is compatible with StudioPaint9.0

    Hardware Notes

    • For any product other than Render Software, all SGIs require a z-buffer, except Indy XL, and Indigo2 XL.
    • Eight-bit graphics configurations are not supported.
    • A minimum of 128MB of RAM is required, however increasing the amount of memory will increase the performance of Alias. It is important to note that IRIX 6.5 requires more system memory than previous versions of IRIX and will likely degrade the performance of Alias if you are running low on memory.

Recommended patch sets: final October 98 set

TIP: When installing patchsets use the i A command (in Software Manager select Panes->Command from the menu) to select all applicable patches.

[1] All noted IRIX 6.2 machines should have the October 98 patch set installed which includes:

[9] The following problems are known with Indy running NG1 graphics:
  • Slow to abort quickrender
  • PowerToon plugin does not produce correct results
  • [10] The following problems are known with Octanes running IRIX 6.5.4
  • Texture maps intermittently fail to display during toggle shade with Fast Options OFF and Interruptible ON.

  • Workaround: Refreshing the display or turning Interruptible OFF will return the texture display during toggle shade.
[11] The following problems are known with Onyx RE2 running with IRIX 6.5.4:
Using Playblast will likely cause your Xserver to crash which will result in a complete loss of data. It is not recommended that IRIX 6.5.4 be installed if you plan on using Playblast.
[12] Diagnostic Curvature shading display is solid white. There is no known workaround.
[13] The following problems are known with Indigo2 XZ and Extreme running with IRIX 6.5.4:
Diagnostic shading with transparency does not update correctly when adjusting camera. Viewport is not refreshed correctly and transparency appears to continually overlap.
Work Around: Turn diagnostic shading off and then on again.

Switching between different diagnostic shading modes and with transparency 'ON' will not always clear the last shading mode used.
Work Around: Turn diagnostic shading off and then on again.

With any diagnostic shading mode 'ON' then selecting render->modeller wire mesh becomes solid black after modeller wire render is complete
Work Around: Turn diagnostic shading off and then on again.
