certain rare cases Windows 2000 SP4 configured machines will encounter
very slow startup times of StudioTools if the computer has an
active network connection. If possible, it is recommended that you
either upgrade to Windows XP or downgrade to Service Pack 3. |
||
Windows XP
Service Pack 2 Notice: StudioTools or its component programs may not launch successfully after installing Service Pack 2. If this occurs, you may either unblock the program via the Windows Firewall Security Alert dialogue, or add it as an Exception in the Exceptions Tab in the Windows Firewall dialogue box. For more information, please see the Microsoft Update In certain
cases some systems running Windows XP Service Pack 2 are unable to
install the HASP device drivers that support the new USB hardware locks
(USB dongles). If you encounter this problem we suggest that you
download and install the latest HASP4 drivers directly from the Aladdin
support pages found here: http://www.aladdin.com/support/hasp/hasp4/enduser.asp.
It is recommended that you use the Command Line Installation method to

Configurations marked Untested have not been tested by Alias and at time of press are NOT Qualified for use with StudioTools. Listed driver is either last known stable driver or current available from vendor. Configurations marked still being tested are still undergoing qualification testing. There will be another refresh of this qualification chart with further information on cards which are still pending qualification.
[3] NOTE: In some cases we have provided direct hyperlinks to the download locations for some drivers. In the event the link is not found, is incorrect, or has been changed, please navigate through the main Web site link provided for that company.
[4] NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you install Service Pack 2 or later for Windows 2000 Professional. This Service Pack fixes a serious memory fragmentation problem that affects StudioTools. One example of this problem is extremely long delete times with large files.
[5] NOTE: Not all cards support hardware overlays. Without overlay support you will not see brush radius outlines when using paint tools and possible draw artifacting with the Action Window. Please consult with your hardware vendor to determine if you card supports hardware overlays. In certain cases we will recommend to disable hardware overlays.
[6] NOTE: Cards that support Full Scene Anti-Aliasing (FSAA) will cause unpredictable behavior with StudioTools if FSAA is enabled. Some cards exhibit worse behavior than others. You will notice severe performance hits if Point of Interest is enabled and/or complete blank modeling views and some minor draw artifacts in the StudioTools user interface. FSAA is not supported with StudioTools. Also refer to AntiAliasing in StudioTools
[8] NOTE: Certain cards allow for anti-aliased hardware shading in StudioTools however, the interactive display quality may be inadequate for most users. Some card manufacturers also offer full scene antialiasing (FSAA) which is NOT supported for use with StudioTools. See Note [6]
[9] NOTE: Please Read AntiAliasing in StudioTools |
Stereo3D Viewing Capable Graphics Cards: |
StudioTools has been tested with CrystalEyes® glasses from StereoGraphics® Corporation |
The
following cards will give satisfactory performance running at a display
resolution of 1280x1024: All other cards that have Stereo3D viewing capability may not provide adequate performance at resolutions higher than 1024x768 and are not recommended. |
Anti-Aliasing in StudioTools: |
StudioTools now provides support for anti-aliased display of surfaces in shaded mode in addition to anti-aliased curves. Currently supported hardware is limited to the Nvidia FX and ATI V series graphics cards (see Graphics Cards and Driver Versions). Qualified driver must be used in order to achieve decent display quality. |
Required
Driver settings:
Set
Anti-Aliasing options to 'Application Controlled'
Required Alias settings: Enable Preferences->General Preferences-> Draw->Antialiasing during shaded draw. Enable DisplayTgls->Smooth (Surfaces must be enabled in options) Known caveats: Main menu bar in StudioTools will appear slightly blurry when Anti-Aliasing is enabled. See Graphics Cards and Driver Versions for hardware specific limitations AntiAliasing with Ultra High Resolution Displays: For High Resolution Displays e.g. IBM T221 you will be unable to use AntiAliasing due to memory limitations in the graphics hardware. Due to the way AntiAliasing works in Studio you will need 3.33 times the amount of video memory for image oversampling. |
Other card manufacturers may offer anti-aliasing capabilities, however mild to severe display problems are likely to be encountered and may be considered intolerable when using StudioTools. It is possible to improve display quality by forcing window redraws while working. |
Tablet Support: | ||||||||||||||||||||
Using StudioTools with a Tablet:
Active Tablet Displays: StudioTools has been tested and confirmed to work with the Wacom Cintiq 18SX Active tablet. At time of press Alias has confirmed stable and decent performance under Windows 2000 or Windows XP. A DVI compatible graphics card is required to use the Cintiq series of tablets. Driver version: 4.75-9 is required. Cintiq 21UX is currently untested. Note Regarding Dual Monitor Configurations: We have encountered a problem whereby a dual monitor configuration will cause incorrect cursor behavior when spanning multiple monitors. Alias is currently investigating this problem with Wacom. At this time there is no solution. Refer to Dual Monitor Support below for more information on running StudioTools with dual monitors. Tablet Driver Notes/Limitations: Intuos3 drivers 4.85-6:
|
Ultra High Resolution Displays:
StudioTools has been tested on the IBM T221 LCD monitor running at a resolution of 3840x2400 with FX2000/3000 graphics adapters. See Detailed Hardware Notes below for more information on each card. Note: You will likely notice a performance degradation when comparing a comparable graphics configuration at lower resolutions. |
Dual Monitor Support |
If your graphics
card supports dual monitor outputs please read the following if you
are considering using StudioTools with multiple displays. There are two
configurations which will affect StudioTools performance with dual
display output. Not all graphics cards support both configurations. Display Mode One: Two Separate Displays (sometimes referred to as Clone view) In this mode each monitor is running a separate display running at a resolution which is unique to each monitor. For example, you can have both monitors set to a resolution of 1280x1024, 1600x1200 etc.
Display Mode Two: Spanned Desktop In this mode the graphics driver interprets the two displays as one virtual desktop, so if you run a single monitor at 1280x1024 then the display resolution in a spanned mode would be 2560x1024.
When using Studio with two displays, where one display is the Wacom Cintiq, you cannot run in a spanned mode. To configure your system to use the Wacom Cintiq in a dual monitor configuration follow these steps: Note: When using a 'spanned' desktop without the Cintiq, StudioTools runs properly on both displays. |
Important Notes: |
Notes on Overlay Planes |
Using video cards without Hardware Overlay planes can result
in poor performance
for certain operations within StudioTools including
(but not restricted to) use of the SID paint tools. There will also be
visual differences compared with Hardware overlays that
may result in difficulty seeing or manipulating aspects of the scene
or StudioTools interface.
Examples of Graphics cards without Hardware overlays include (but are not restricted to): NVIDIA based GeForce/GeForce2 video cardsExamples of Graphics Cards where Hardware Overlays can be turned on/off include (but are not restricted to): 3DLabs Wildcat, ATI FireGLT2/X1/X2, NVIDIA Quadro4 900/980 XGL, Quadro FX |
Notes on Optimizing Refresh in Windows 2000 and Windows XP |
Occasionally windows menus may fail to refresh over an
OpenGL window with the default "Fade Effects" setting enabled in the
OS. There are also some refresh issues associated with mouse pointer
shadowing. For optimum performance under Windows 2000 and XP, use the
following settings in the Control Panel:
Display Properties> Appearance or Effects> Visual Effects> Use transition effects for menus and tooltips> OFF or Scroll Effect Mouse
Properties> Pointers> Enable Pointer Shadow> OFF |

Limitation | If Anti-aliased surface shading is enabled in General Preferences you cannot toggle the anti-aliased display using TglSmooth. StudioTools will always run with surface anti-aliasing as long as the preference is enabled.
Solution/Workaround | Disable Anti-aliased surface shading in Preferences->General Preferences->Draw and restart StudioTools.
Limitation | Hardware overlays are not supported when running in a dual monitor configuration. You will only get hardware overlays if there is only one display active and it is set to be monitor 1.
Solution/Workaround | None
Limitation | Main menu bar, layer bar and modeling views suffer mild display artifacting and poor refresh when anti-aliased surface display is enabled.
Solution/Workaround | Disable Anti-aliased surface shading in Preferences->General Preferences->Draw and restart StudioTools.
Limitation | Slow selection performance with anti-aliased surface display.
Solution/Workaround | Disable Anti-aliased surface shading in Preferences->General Preferences->Draw and restart StudioTools.
Limitation | Significant drop in interactive performance both with playback framerate and selection if there are open windows obscuring any of the StudioTools viewports.
Solution/Workaround | Use Windows Classic Theme under Display Properties.
Limitation | No silhouette line with hardware hiddenline display.
Solution/Workaround | None
Limitation | Using a SpaceBall device with StudioTools may exhibit a significant lag when accessing any menu item immediately after any SpaceBall input.
Solution/Workaround | Reset SpaceBall device settings and restart StudioTools.
Limitation | Pull down cascading menus in rare cases may fail to accept mouse input.
Solution/Workaround | Do not release mouse button when selecting cascading menu items or restart StudioTools. |
