[1] It is highly recomended that you use an external keyboard and 3 button mouse for any extended use of StudioTools when using a laptop computer.

[2] The CELSIUS Mobile H computer ships with a removable keyboard using Bluetooth® technology. This keyboard will not work correctly with StudioTools when using any of the keyboard hotkey combinations that require simultaneous use of two or more keys e.g. Shift+Alt or Shift+ Ctrl. Please use one of the following workarounds:

1. Use PS/2 cable to connect the wireless keyboard to the computer (provided by Fujitsu-Siemens, USB mouse required with this configuration)
2. Use external keyboard using a standard PS/2 cable.

[3] Early versions of the SGI 230 had AGP fast writes enabled in the BIOS. Having this setting is NOT recommended as it will likely cause operating system hangs when using StudioTools and other applications. Configurations marked Untested have not been tested by Alias|Wavefront, and at time of press are NOT Qualified. Listed driver is either last known stable driver or current available from vendor.
[2] NOTE: There are a large number of OEM and individual board vendors' graphics systems in existence based on the GeForce2 chipsets. We have tested generic versions of the GeForce2 cards using the specified NVIDIA reference drivers. At this time we can offer no guarantees of the behaviour or performance of specific cards with StudioTools. Use these cards at your own risk and subject to the Alias|Wavefront Support services guidelines.
[3] NOTE: In some cases we have provided direct hyperlinks to the download locations for some drivers. In the event the link is not found, is incorrect, or has been changed, please navigate through the main Web site link provided for that company.
[4] NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you install Service Pack 2 or later for Windows 2000 Professional. This Service Pack fixes a serious memory fragmentation problem that affects StudioTools. One example of this problem is extremely long delete times with large files.
[5] NOTE: Not all cards support hardware overlays. Without overlay support you will not see brush radius outlines when using paint tools and possible draw artifacting with the Action Window and the Text tool. Please consult with your hardware vendor to determine if you card supports hardware overlays. In certain cases we will recommend to disable hardware overlays
[6] NOTE: Cards that support Full Scene Anti-Aliasing (FSAA) will cause unpredictable behavior with StudioTools if FSAA is enabled. Some cards exhibit worse behavior than others. You will notice severe performance hits if Point of Interest is enabled and/or complete blank modeling views and some minor draw artifacts in the StudioTools user interface. At this time FSAA is not supported with StudioTools.
[7] NOTE: The Wildcat 4 series of cards are known to have issues with the SGI ZX10 workstation. It is possible that you can permanently damage your graphics card if you attempt to use the Wildcat 4 with the ZX10.

  • Stereo3D Viewing Capable Graphics Cards:
StudioTools has been tested with CrystalEyes® glasses from StereoGraphics® Corporation
The following cards will give satisfactory performance running at a display resolution of 1280x1024:
  • ATI FireGL4
  • 3DLabs Wildcat 5110, 6110,  6210, 7110, 7210
All other cards that have Stereo3D viewing capability may not provide adequate performance at resolutions higher than 1024x768 and are not recommended.
  •

    Tablet Support:

    Using StudioTools with a Tablet:
StudioTools has been tested and confirmed to work with the Wacom Intuos and Intuos2 series of tablets using the 4.75-9 driver. Using the 4.76-4 driver is known to cause tablet dropouts and is not recommended for use with StudioTools.

    Active Tablet Displays:

StudioTools has been tested and confirmed to work with the Wacom Cintiq 18SX Active tablet. At time of press Alias has confirmed stable and decent performance under Windows 2000 or Windows XP. A DVI compatible graphics card is required to use the Cintiq series of tablets. Driver version: 4.75-9 is required.

Note Regarding Dual Monitor Configurations: We have encountered a problem whereby a dual monitor configuration will cause incorrect cursor behavior when spanning multiple monitors. Alias is currently investigating this problem with Wacom. At this time there is no solution. Refer to Dual Monitor Support below for more information on running StudioTools with dual monitors.

    Ultra High Resolution Displays:

StudioTools has been tested on the IBM T221 LCD monitor running at a resolution of 3840x2400 with the ATI FireGL 4 graphics adapter.

Note: Running StudioTools at this resolution will result in menus and icons appearing extremely small. In some cases it is possible to enlarge the size of fonts and icons in the StudioTools Preferences. You will also notice a performance degradation when comparing a comparable graphics configuration at lower resolutions.

    Dual Monitor Support
If your graphics card supports dual monitor outputs please read the following if you are considering using StudioTools with multiple displays. There are two configurations which will affect StudioTools performance with dual display output. Not all graphics cards support both configurations.

Display Mode One: Two Separate Displays (sometimes referred to as Clone view)

In this mode each monitor is running a separate display running at a resolution which is unique to each monitor. For example, you can have both monitors set to a resolution of 1280x1024, 1600x1200 etc.
      Limitations
      • The Studio interface will only be displayed properly on the primary monitor.
      • Drop down menus, marking menus and DirectRender windows will only display properly on the primary monitor.
      • If you want to use Studio for modelling on the second display, open the Display properties again and set it as the primary display.
    Display Mode Two: Spanned Desktop

In this mode the graphics driver interprets the two displays as one virtual desktop, so if you run a single monitor at 1280x1024 then the display resolution in a spanned mode would be 2560x1024.

      Limitations

When using Studio with two displays, where one display is the Wacom Cintiq, you cannot run in a spanned mode. To configure your system to use the Wacom Cintiq in a dual monitor configuration follow these steps:

      • Uninstall the Wacom display driver (if you were previously using a regular Wacom tablet)
      • Connect the Wacom Cintiq to either the first or second graphics port
      • Open the Display Properties, select the Wacom display and set it as the primary monitor.
      • Install the Wacom display driver
      • Open Settings>Control Panel>Wacom Tablet Properties and select Calibrate to align the tablet to the Cintiq display.

Note: When using a 'spanned' desktop without the Cintiq, StudioTools runs properly on both displays.

    Important Notes:
    Notes on Overlay Planes
Using video cards without Hardware Overlay planes can result in poor performance for certain operations within StudioTools including (but not restricted to) use of the SID paint tools. There will also be visual differences compared with Hardware overlays that may result in difficulty seeing or manipulating aspects of the scene or StudioTools interface.
Examples of Graphics cards without Hardware overlays include (but are not restricted to):
    NVIDIA based GeForce/GeForce2 video cards
Examples of Graphics Cards where Hardware Overlays can be turned on/off include (but are not restricted to):
3DLabs GVX420/GVX1/Wildcat, ATI FireGL2/4/8800/X1, NVIDIA Quadro 900/980 XGL, Quadro FX
Although Studio may be used successfully on systems containing these Graphics Cards, only those specifically listed here have been tested. Please review the notes below carefully as some of these cards have limitations which may make them unsuitable for your purposes.
Notes on Optimizing Refresh in Windows 2000 and Windows XP
Occasionally windows menus may fail to refresh over an OpenGL window with the default "Fade Effects" setting enabled in the OS. There are also some refresh issues associated with mouse pointer shadowing. For optimum performance under Windows 2000 and XP, use the following settings in the Control Panel:

Display Properties> Appearance or Effects> Visual Effects> Use transition effects for menus and tooltips> OFF or Scroll Effect

    Mouse Properties> Pointers> Enable Pointer Shadow> OFF

    Please Read
    • Intel Pentium II processor or greater is required for StudioTools. Any CPU that fails to support the MMX instruction set will likely encounter problems running StudioTools.
    • A three button mouse is required.
    • A graphics tablet is recommended for use with the sketching functionality.
    • At least 256MB of RAM is required and 512MB or more is recommended to run StudioTools for Windows.
    • It may be possible to successfully use StudioTools for Windows with a non-qualified configuration, however, support and maintenance programs will be subject to the Alias|Wavefront Support services guidelines.
    • At time of press Windows 2000 Server has not been tested in any way by Alias|Wavefront and cannot guarantee its performance or stability.
    • The configurations shown are subject to change, and additional qualified configurations may be added after qualification testing has been carried out.
    • Where Graphics Controllers are configurable, you must have at least 16MB of texture memory (TRAM). Due to the differences in the manner in which hardware vendors approach display memory, we suggest that you consult your hardware vendor to ensure that your configuration will support your required resolution.
    • The graphics drivers specified in this table are the drivers that were used for the qualification process. While it may be possible to use StudioTools for Windows successfully on earlier or later drivers, Alias|Wavefront cannot guarantee their performance.
    • Alias|Wavefront will continue to explore new candidates for StudioTools for Windows qualification and will monitor the current configurations. For the most recent information on qualification, please refer to www.aliaswavefront.com.
