[6.3] O2 Recommended Patch Set
(Last Updated: June 1, 1998)
(No change from last month)
This is for both R5K and R10K O2 systems. It applies to the second 6.3 release (6.3 Including R10000 O2). Customers running the first 6.3 release must upgrade to the second release. Some patches for the first 6.3 release may apply to the second, but in general this isn't true.

To determine which version of IRIX 6.3 you are running, you can execute the following command:

% uname -R

The output will show the following if you are running IRIX 6.3 for O2 (the first release):

6.3

The output will show the following if you are running IRIX 6.3 for O2 including R10000 (the second release):

6.3 O2 R10000

If Patch 2838 is installed on diskless share trees, the MAKEDEV
command must be executed after the patch is installed, on each
diskless client before it is rebooted, to avoid a client panic:
        cd /dev; ./MAKEDEV
An existing problem with the handling of stereo video timing
tables can cause the X server to hang if a stereo timing has
been selected and made permanent with Xscreen or setmon, and
the X server is restarted. Even though the X server cannot
start up, its process stays stuck in memory and cannot be killed.
It is necessary to reboot the system in order to recover; after
reboot, Xscreen or setmon should be used to make a non-stereo
timing permanent (eg "/usr/gfx/setmon -x 1280x1024_72".
Then bring the system up in multi-user mode.
To avoid this problem, it is suggested
that stereo timings not be made permanent.
After installing patch 2232 the tape icon may not appear after the first
system reboot. The icon will appear on the second reboot and on all
subsequent reboots.
Patch 2485 may result in the following console and SYSLOG messages being
generated:
   unix: MVP: Audio/Video Interface(AV1) 4 out of 6 chips didn't respond.
   unix: MVP: Audio/Video Interface(AV1) 2 out of 6 chips didn't respond.
These are normal messages; they do not indicate a problem.
A problem has been found with patch 2485 that causes "full screen video out"
in PAL format to fail. If you are using PAL format to do full screen video out
DO NOT INSTALL patch 2485. Instead install the previous patch 2359.
If you have saved video control panel settings you should remove the files
.videopanelrc from all user home directory before installing patch 2485. Patch
2485 change some default timing parameters that are not compatible with
earlier default values in the video control panel. After installing
patch 2485 you may may reselect your user settings and save a new file.
User running Alias Wavefront Maya on an R10k should not install the patch set.
A problem exists which cause horizontal lines to appear when an object movement
occurs in front of an image plane. This problem has only been observed on R10k
machines.
A problem has been found with "showcase" on a heavily stressed system
running low on available system memory. While drawing a large number
of horizontal and vertical lines using "free draw" tool of Master
Gizmo, the process of filling of polygons between lines will
occassionally be displays incorrectly. The lines will appear
to move off of the screen. This problem is being tracked in bug ID
591912. This problem was analyzed sufficiently to verify that it is
not caused by, any changes in the patch set. The root cause of the
problem is believed to be in "showcase" itself and it will be
observed on systems which are running low on memory.
Patch 2037 has introduced a problem with CosmoCode where any
action that brings up a file selection dialog causes CosmoCode to
dump core. Users of CosmoCode should not install patch 2037. It is
expected that this will be fixed in CosmoCode 2.3 or a future patch.
If patch 2039 (or one of its successors) is installed on an
O2, the system may take as long as 10 minutes to boot.
This problem is rare, but has been seen in the field. The
problem is being tracked on bug 529550.
Under certain circumstances, problems may be seen when mounting resources
such as DOS filesysems or CD-ROM devices from another system over NFS. In a
similar vein, trying to execute programs off an NFS mounted partition in
a diskless configuration may fail. This problem is present in patch 2957
and is expected to be fixed in a new version of the patch. Users should
not install patch 2957 or revert to the previous patch until the new patch
is available.

IMPORTANT!

Patch 2715 is part of the June 1998 patchset but should NOT be installed. It has been replaced by patch 3135. It should be noted that patch 3135 is not included as part of the June patchset but is qualified to be used with Alias in conjunction with the June 1998 patchset. If you install patch 2715 you are very likely to encounter software instability and crashes.
