About the DGN Import Plug-in

DGN is a file format commonly used by Bentley MicroStation®. Using the Autodesk® Design Review DGN Import plug-in, you can import a 2D V8 DGN file into Design Review 2008. During the import process, Design Review publishes a new DWF file from the DGN file. The original file is unaffected by the import process.

Install the DGN Import Plug-in

Before you can import a DGN file into Design Review, you must first install the free DGN Import plug-in.

To install the DGN Import plug-in

If necessary, exit Design Review 2008.
On the plug-in Web page, click the EXE file.
When prompted, click Run.
Follow the installation wizard’s prompts.

The next time you start Design Review, in the Import File dialog box, the Files of Type drop-down list will display DGN (*.dgn) as an option.

Use the DGN Import Plug-in

To import a DGN file

Choose File > Import. The Import File dialog box opens.
From the Files of Type drop-down list, select DGN (*.dgn).
Navigate to where the DGN file you want to import is stored.
Select the file you want to import and click Open. The published DWF file opens in Design Review.
Note: While importing a message box may open, stating that some data loss may occur in the imported DWF file. Click OK to continue importing or click Cancel to stop the import.

Tip: To quickly import a DGN file, you can drag and drop a DGN file into the Canvas Pane of Design Review.

Known Issues

When zooming in or out using Design Review, the scales of hatch patterns in the DWF file may not remain at their original scales from the original DGN file.
Orbiting or intersecting hatch patterns are not supported by Design Review.
When importing some DGN files, dimension text may not display as expected in the resulting DWF file.
Model space for a DGN file lacks a paper size. As such, the import process provides a default paper size for this data in the DWF file.
DGN line styles will maintain their published properties, but may lose their shape and/or text information.
When importing some DGN files, view camera angles may not display as expected in the resulting DWF file.
When importing some DGN files, some view attributes set in MicroStation may not be imported into the resulting DWF file.
When importing DGN files containing 3D models, the error message should specifically indicate that importing DGN files containing 3D models is not supported.
When importing DGN files, saved views are not imported as named views in the resulting DWF file.
When importing some DGN files, interpolation curves may not display as expected in the resulting DWF file.
After opening a raster image in Design Review, you must save the resulting DWF file before importing DGN files that contain raster images.
Importing some DGN files containing raster images may cause Design Review to display an error.
When importing some DGN files containing spiral curves, the curves may not display as expected in the resulting DWF file.
When importing DGN files, tolerances in linear dimensions may not display as expected in the resulting DWF file.
When importing DGN files, dimensions with secondary units are not imported.
When importing DGN files, the units label format "SU" is changed to "SU Label".
When importing DGN files, alternate labels are not imported.
When importing DGN files, multiline overwrite text in dimensions may not display as expected in the resulting DWF file.
When importing DGN files, OFF extension lines in the original DGN file are displayed in the resulting DWF file.
When importing DGN files, extension lines with a negative offset value may not display as expected in the resulting DWF file.
When importing DGN files, custom Leader style Tool settings for radial dimensions may not display as expected in the resulting DWF file.
When importing DGN files, the Units Separator in metric formatted dimension text is not imported.
