Mask or freeze regions on a model
 
 
 

The Freeze tool locks affected vertices on a model so they cannot be modified while you sculpt. You can freeze vertices on both the base subdivision level and on sculpt layers. By default, the affected faces appear blue whenever they are frozen.

Freeze vertices on a model

  1. In the tool trays, click the Sculpt Tools tab and select the Freeze tool.
  2. In the 3D View, stroke on the model in the region(s) you want to freeze.

    The areas you stroke appear blue to indicate they are frozen.

    NoteThe opacity of the blue relates to the amount of freezing. A fully opaque blue locks the affected vertices, whereas partial opacity of the blue allows the vertices to move slightly when a sculpting tool is applied. Remember that the falloff setting for the tool affects how freezing is applied and can be modified by choosing another falloff preset from the Falloff tray.

Unfreeze vertices on a model

  1. To unfreeze areas on a model you can either press the Ctrl key and stroke on the frozen region, or turn on Invert Function in the Freeze properties window and stroke on the frozen region to remove it.
  2. To remove the frozen areas on the model entirely, simply select Edit > Unfreeze All (Shift + U).

Mask regions of a model

The Mask tool lets you paint opacity values on sculpted regions to non-destructively hide the sculpting on a layer. The Mask tool only works with sculpting layers and does not work when masking on the base subdivision level for the model. Each sculpting layer can have its own mask.
