Materials are a collection of properties assigned to a mesh that control how the surface of the mesh reacts to light and appears in the 3D View when rendered in shaded mode within Mudbox.
Examples of material properties include: color, glossiness, and transparency. A material can also be categorized by the mathematical algorithms that its based on, for example: Phong.
A default material always exists for a mesh in Mudbox, but you can create your own custom materials as well as apply texture maps. A texture map is an image you add to an existing material to enhance its appearance beyond what the material's basic properties provide. You can use texture maps to create the appearance of bumps, apply a logo image, or apply a pattern or marbled color image. Texture maps allow you to add visual detail that would be otherwise difficult to achieve by sculpting alone and achieve a more realistic appearance as a result.
